Finally got my NW Solo in the water

Well, after building a rack, buying a paddle, buying a PFD, setting up my car, and doing a little maintenance on my new-to-me 2015 NW Solo canoe, I finally got it on the water. :p The main goal on this trip was to get my Border Collie, Lucy, accustomed to the canoe. I also, of course, wanted to...

Carrying my canoe on a Tesla Model 3

I own a 2018 Tesla Model 3 and it has as few unusual things about it for carrying a canoe, so I thought I would write up a quick description on what I did. I realize I'm not breaking any new ground here, but seeing examples of what others have done really helps when planning these things out. So...

    A little canoe maintenance

That's a good idea. I'll keep that in mind for next time. Yes, unfortunately it will be stored outside. I already have a cover for it, and I anticipate re-oiling it at least twice a year.

    A little canoe maintenance

Thanks, Alan. Just wanted to make sure I didn't screw anything up! :)

    A little canoe maintenance

One of the things I wanted to do to my new-to-me NW Solo was to clean it up and go over it and see if there was anything I needed to do to it before putting it into service. I started with a good washing. The canoe wasn't particularly dirty, but it did have a pretty solid layer of dust on it...

    Where Are All The Canoes?

What kills me is the number of people on sit-on-top kayaks. I'm like, "that is just a less useful canoe!"

WTB - A decent composite solo in the southeast?

On the Facebook group "Northstar Northwind Solo User Group" there is a NW Solo for sale in LIttle Rock, Arkansas. That may be a bit of a haul for you, but that is the closest one I've seen online so far.

    Any upper extremity amputees here?

Would a double blade kayak paddle work better for you? I don't know anything about attachment methods to your arm, but the kayak paddle would remove the need to switch sides.

WTB - A decent composite solo in the southeast?

I can relate. It took me two years of looking to find my Northwind Solo in Florida. Kayaks as far as the eye can see around here, too. I found mine on the Facebook group "North American Canoe Trader". People post For Sale ads they see in various places of good quality canoes. Most are in the...

Greetings, and a Bell layup question.

That wood cleaned up so nicely! Well done!

Canoe Rack on the side of my house

Yep. I worried about that as well. That is one of the reasons for the holes in the horizontal beams. I will be putting a small line through it to help keep it in place. Also the cover to protect it from the sun and abrasion.

Canoe Rack on the side of my house

I live in a pretty safe neighborhood. I'm not really worried about it getting stolen. But the top of the canoe is below the top of the fenceline, so no one can see it unless they look over the fence.

Canoe Rack on the side of my house

As you know, I recently acquired a new-to-me NW Solo canoe. The purchase was a bit of a surprise as I had been combing the online ads for over a year and never had one appear close to me for a good price. I was starting to resign myself to buying one new, and had started planning to perhaps...

    Looking for a paddle

Yeah, a paddle is definitely going to be an "oversized" package. If I get a BB paddle, I would do it through REI as well to get free shipping. Hopefully I'm not too hard on the paddle where I have to worry about durability. Everything is mostly sand around here.

    Looking for a paddle

I think what is probably going to happen is I'm just going to have to get one and live with it for a while. Using the BB measuring method, it comes out to a 56 for me, too.

    Looking for a paddle

Thanks for pointing out the grip on the Arrow. I agree with you that the Java ST is the best looking one. I think maybe I am leaning towards that one at the moment (subject to change at any moment).

    Looking for a paddle

Thanks for the detailed response. I'm 6" 2" with a 34" inseam and 180 lbs on an average day, so I also have a lanky build. I mostly prefer to sit. Sometimes I switch and sometimes use correction strokes. Very rarely do I kneel. I have been thinking that most of the x-tail paddles seem like...

    Looking for a paddle

I was looking at the Arrow from Bending Branches. Not sure if is the correct shape for my part of the world, or if there is one more preferable. I'm afraid I'm not living in "canoe country." A search for "canoe paddle" in FB Marketplace reveals a total of about 20 paddles for sale in the...

    Looking for a paddle

As I mentioned in my introduction, I recently acquired a used NW Solo canoe. I am trying to figure out what paddle to buy to use with it, and I'm afraid I have a bit of analysis paralysis here. I'm hoping the brain trust here can help me make a decision I live in Florida, so there is a lot of...
