Al, I am in the stern of my 1970 Sears 17’ boom-alum. My BIL is in the bow. I talked him into the trip since he was a couple of months out of the Marine Corp and I wanted someone stronger to handle the portages. Since then I learned to take at least of couple of high school guys on trips and pit them against each other when it comes to humping all my excess comfort oriented gear.
I assumed it was aluminum, but couldn't tell for sure. My first trip was also in an aluminum canoe. It was a rented one and we damaged it when we went broadside into a fallen tree and had a hard time retrieving it.
Good idea about bringing someone young and strong along for the heavy work. I was able to train and break-in a few of my nephews to carry the boat by the third day of a trip. Then they got married, had kids and didn't have time for me. I am glad that two of them are still tripping though.

Forty Five years ago I did a soil survey of BLM lands in eastern Washington including areas along the Columbia. I remember sitting at one of the first wineries in the State at Patterson overlooking the river, and having a discussion with my associate about the future of growing wine grapes in the region. We concluded that it was the perfect place to expand wine grapes and we were right.
I have never paddled the Columbia but I have taken the sternwheeler from Portland out to Astoria and up to Clarkston, WA on the Snake. I can recommend the trip.
I keep thinking of doing a trip on Roosevelt Lake behind Grand Coulee Dam. It is 120 miles long.

Washington state produces some very fine wines, both red and white. If I'd just bought a piece of land around Walla Walla back in 1980...
I never did paddle Lake Roosevelt, mainly because of the power boat and party barge traffic, but there are some beautiful places along the reach. And you have to pay attention to the wind on any of the reservoirs, especially the longer fetches.
We've thought about that sternwheeler trip. I've seen a lot of the lower Columbia and Snake River by car and on foot but it would be nice to see that stretch from the water.

Thursday photo from two Thursdays ago...
I took a rapid, unscheduled descent from a work scaffold, face-first onto a driveway!!! Broken wrist (dominant hand side unfortunately), eye orbit, tooth, collarbone, and middle finger opposite hand. Those of you following my Atkinson Traveler build will have to be patient. Only primer, paint, outwales, and stem bands left to go but all require good hands!
I am healing with no long-term consequences I hope...perhaps the lesson to be learned is retire from building trades while uninjured!!

That was a close call Patrick. I wish you a speedy recovery.
At 18 we all might have bounced back up and kicked that scaffold….not so much these days! Be well.

Thank you all for your well wishes! In the building trades there are daily aches, pains, and usually a little blood shed but this is my worst ever in over 50 years. It's sobering and makes me realize I should make some changes if I want to preserve my outdoor aims as well as my canoe restoration and building interests! Hopefully my next post will include some canoe progress. Again, thank you everyone.
