    16' wooden Great Canadian canoe

It's a nice boat, I owned a Great Canadian previously and liked it. Selling it may be challenging. Wood canoes in general seem to be in low demand right now. Many lovers of wood canoe don't want fiberglass on them, few buyers of synthetic canoes want a wooden hull. Yours is between two markets...

Your first canoeing or canoe trip memories

I have good childhood memories of canoeing. My Dad built a Trailcraft around 1965-66. I was about 5, and remember sitting in the middle of it looking at the canvas skin through the open frames. Dad later built a fiberglass canoe from a kit, maybe another Trailcraft. We used that canoe a lot...

    Resin, Hardener Age

I've used older epoxy and polyester without problems. The hardener for epoxy may change color, but still works. I've also stored the chemicals in a boat over NY winters without losing effectiveness.

Adirondack Guide Boat - Northern VT

Very nice boat, reasonably priced. I rowed a guideboat recently for the first time, it's sweet.

I was there also, beautiful boats and really nice people.

Birch Bark Canoe from John McPhee's book

I was at the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association Assembly last week. There were two birchbark canoes displayed, both built in recent years. I helped one owner turn his over, and also carry it from the water. I also visited the Adirondack Museum in Blue Mountain Lake. They have some amazing canoes...

    Photo of the day

I paddled across the Lower St Regis too, and sailed across the other way and back. Beautiful.

Official Website for Florida Paddling Trails

I've visited Florida with a canoe and a kayak. Water everywhere.

    Keels: Yeah or Nay?

I own one with, one without. They're different hull shapes, so not really comparable. I don't run rocky rivers, and don't plan to remove the one keel.

    Looking for a paddle

I think I have bought all of my paddles used. Look at local classifieds, buy a few.

The Appeal of a Long Wilderness Trip?

This thread came to mind recently when I finished another sail voyage. I opted out of the trans Atlantic trip. The boat is too small, the trip too long. The skipper was unable to find any other crew for that crossing. He started planning to sail to Bermuda and back. I accepted an invitation to...

1st paddle (AKA a Paddle from Scrap?) plus a wood glue discussion

Very cool, thanks for sharing. Using your hands to as measuring tools works very well, especially to judge smoothness. Gorilla Glue is good stuff, but not permanently waterproof. I used it to repair an oar blade. It lasted a long time, then one day the edge just fell off. Those oars got used...

Folbot: Fix, Experiment or Set Free?

That looks pretty rough. I've had three Folbots, one a non folder that leaked. I did some repairs with AquaSeal, some with Gorilla Tape. But I didn't have gaping holes. Mine was a 17.5' Super, and ridiculously stable. I later stripped the skin thinking to cover it with something lighter, but...

    Wind threshold

The boat has a glued lapstrake plywood hull, it's light and stiff, designed for double paddle. A prior owner added the sail rig, a BSD Classic Canoe 36. The hull was never designed to sail, much less with a tall rig twisting it in a fresh breeze, and a tall man hiking out the other way. The lap...
