“Yeah, life sucks in bear country,” Orr said in a video viewed more than 20 million times. “Just had a grizzly with two cubs come at me from about 80 yards. And, uh, I sprayed the s—t out of her with bear spray and then I went on my face and protected the back of my neck.

“She got my head good – I don’t know what’s under my hat – my ear, my arm, uh, pieces of stuff hanging out. I don’t know what’s going on in there. And then my shoulder. She ripped up, I think my arm’s broke, but legs are good, internal organs are good, eyes are good. I just walked out three miles, now I got to go to the hospital, so be safe out there. Bear spray doesn’t always work but it’s better than nothing.”

I saw that earlier today. Scary story. Can't imagine what it must have felt like when it came back for round 2.

I saw that yesterday on Facebook!! There is actually a more people that survive bear attack than we think, I know of 2 just here in the Yukon. He is very lucky indeed. Bear spree is also proven to be the most effective mean of getting a bear off you case. Way better and safer than a fire arm, especially the hand gun type! A saying amongst guide in Alaska is that if you gonna cary a handgun as bear protection, better file that front sight flush to the barrel, that way it won't hurt as much when he shoves it up your arss!!

Canotrouge ," What a beautiful saying"! I love it. We have some pretty big black bears in Pennsylvania but those Grizzlys are a horse of a different color. My uncle was stationed in Alaska during the Korean War and told stories how you had better keep your wits about you. No Joke !

Anyone else hold their breath during the grizzly bear attack scene in the movie The Revenant? When the scout (DiCaprio) is in the northwest forest silently hunting, he suddenly sees at a distance a grizzly bear cub scurrying through the undergrowth, and that's when both you and the character think "Oh nnnooooo..."
Watch the movie to see what happens next. And yes, there is a round 2.

The article says the guy had bear spray and pistol on his chest. He sprayed the bear but it didn't stop the momma grizz, and the bear's first attack knocked the guy's pistol off his chest and out of his reach on the ground for the second attack.

It is surprising that they aren't fatal more often, but when you consider they usually only last seconds and that they just want to illiminate the threat and not eat you I can see why.

Smith and Wesson has a 50 caliber short barrel 5 shot revolver that is designed for bear protection that I would like to have but can't part with the 1100.00. I hear it will just about break your wrist to shoot it.

Forrest Runes some of those big 600 and 700 lb. black bears in Pa. are probably a lot bigger than most interior grizzlies. It's the grizzlies aggressive nature when threatened that makes them dangerous.

Glenn, nothing is 100% effective, not even guns, maybe he missed the face or maybe the spray lost some potentcy, they do say to replace it every year. I saw a cell phone picture of my co workers friend who was attacked this Spring by the bear he was hunting. He had most of the skin of his head and face peeled back and an eyeball was hanging out, you wouldn't think his injuries were survivable. I forget the details but he had to drive his own machine out and it took a few hours. He made it to the hospital where they had to fly a surgion up from Seattle to fix him up. Three weeks later he was out and about, missing an eye though.

It is one thing to have a gun(pistol/revolver) that can possibly take a bear out, and it is an other to be able to use it adequately/proficiently on a bear that is charging you a 60+km/hr where the only real target is the head and it is boring up and down left to right! I shot a lot of pistol and revolver up to 44 mag, and on a moving target(paper that is) it is surprising how bad a shot you are compare to the inch group at 20 yard you can do on a non moving target! I just think that Bear spray is more efficient and a 12 gauge with the first shot being 00 buck shot followed by a good quality slug is a good second option!! I'm not sure what is 80 yards @ 40 miles/hr, but not a lot of time to do much!!

In a blind, surprise attack you won't have time to use anything.

Bear spray has an expiration date? I'll have to check mine, which I keep as a zombie deterrent in the magic bus along with my golok and parang machetes and my Louisville Slugger.

I don't think this video features a grizzly, but it does contain the creature most to be avoided in the wilderness. Just listen.

Good for him to be able to spray her with only 4 seconds of reaction time! I assume he saw her before, and that he had his bear spray in hand and ready, maybe he sprayed her to soon... that would explain the reason she went through the spay mist?!?

The mistake that the women made was not using vulgar four letter words when yelling at the bear. it always worked for me.:)
