New wood gunnels and decks on an old Novacraft prospector 17 kevlar light. On the Thwart and Yoke I added a hard wood spline across the end grain cause it was all split up and they didn't want to replace all of the wood to keep the price down. I've fixed a few that way and they last for ever after that!!
I'm pretty happy how the decks and the rest of the job turned out with only 6hrs into it!

That is a darn good job. She almost looks brand spanking new ... when looking from the top down anyway!. Cool idea on the splines

Jason

Nice job on saving the thwart, and the final picture of the canoe looks sweet. You did a nice professional job on the decks and the gunnels too, the customer should be very happy.

The gunnels I bought already made, it was cheaper than me making them from scratch and plus I didn't have access to 18' ash. These cost me $200 canadian all machined and ready to oil and install. I could have not made them for less! I really hope she's happy and doesn't bark at the time/price I will charge her!

Thank you Jason and Robin! The Hull would need a lot of work, Gel coat as lots of spider cracks but I hate gel coat so i'm happy she didn't want me to fix that! I suck at it and to do a good job it takes me a lot of time and that means a lot of money in the end.... I don't think gel coat should be use on canoes, just cosmetic anyway and make fixing a bit of a nightmare when you need to do fixing!

Good to see the new shop floor covered in wood shavings, extension cords and equipment.

I appreciate the hardwood spline trick on the thwart and yoke ends. But for a canoe of my own, unless it was a deeply sculpted yoke, beyond my shade tree craftsmanship, I would have made new ones and eventually repurposed the old ones cut shorter and refinished.

dang, $200 for ready made scalloped gunwales? Were that the case here I would have regunwaled with wood a lot more often.

EDIT: I am with you on gel coat repairs, unless it is basic white I do not want to even go there.

I would have made or bought(way cheaper than making them) but the clients didn't want to invest the money. So I fixed them and really they are better than new!!

Before I recently bought some 18' ash, I use 10' ash and spliced them, then rounded them off with a belt sander. They look good with a 10" splice and a lot cheaper than $200, fwiw.

I don't know how much you charge an hour, but milling the wood( that is if you can find some good enough for gunnels up here and it goes at $14 a board foot when you find them!) plus the price of the wood, I'm not sure I can make it for much less than that.... All prices are in Can pesos of course!!

I buy my ash for $1.50-2.50 bf off craigslist. As far as milling I use an old Sears cheapo table saw and finish up with a belt sander cause that's about all I have. I sell my canoes from $400-800, depends on what they are and how much I paid for them. I might have sold 30 plastic canoes and had only one person look and not buy. I always give the buyer a discount unless the price is good and the buyer rubs me wrong. haha
My work is good from about 5' away, better from 10';)
I have met some really nice folks selling canoes, and most appreciate getting a nice looking ash trimmed canoe at at a decent price.

hahaha I can' t even buy spruce for that price.... As far as canoe price goes, a used, beat up SP3 canoe sell for $1000-1200 up here, Royalex in the same condition usually around 1800-2200......

People don't want wood gunnels on Royalex/SP3 boats because of the extreme temperature up here, lots of these boats will develop cold cracks and they a re a pain to fix....

And I understand that you don't try to make a living at it. Me I can't work for 15-20 bucks an hour that is just not possible...

Dayum Canotrouge, we need to talk. I have a couple near pristine and well outfitted Royalex tandems, with vinyl or aluminum gunwales, that I would love to sell at that price, even with the exchange rate.

A 20 foot Esquif Miramichi, 17 foot Mad River Revelation, maybe even the 17 foot Nova Craft Cronje.

$1600 Canadian on the RX Miramichi, $1100 on the RX Revelation, keep the change.

I may have an Ontario camp trip later this year, and could come up with the US motor registered paperwork and etc for the Miramichi and Revelation, and, eh, ya know, head home with better gas mileage empty racks.

How far up where is up here?

Hahahaha sure come over with the boats on that truck and drive the 6000km(12000 round trip) from ontario to get up here and you will see that all the sudden you dont make money anymore!!

Road Trip!

Well yas, I guess not eh.

I guess if you wait a few years and drive up with a full trailer of good RX tripping canoe in good shape than it would be worth it and while you are you do a trip under the midnight sun!!
