Wood Canvas Canoes/Steve Lapey/White Rose Canoe

I emailed with Steve just a few weeks ago and he told me he was no longer making or restoring canoes. I have two Chestnuts that he restored, a Prospector and a PAL. He is an excellent craftsman and these canoes are simply beautiful. And he’s a nice guy. Visited his tiny shop — a shed really — last year. He was working on a courting canoe at the time. The space was tight but he had it laid out nicely and I could imagine him moving gracefully from one task to another.

Steve is a really nice guy, he has done a lot for the WCHA and his New England chapter of that group is very active thanks to his leadership. His annual meetings in the Boston area are a big hit with the group and well attended.
I went on a group canoe trip in downeast Maine with him once, a lot of fun and it was nice to be one of 4 wood canvas canoes on the trip.
