I can't take credit for this trick, but recently while helping my son strip up his canoe, This came in handy matching up strip pairs.
Markings on the ends stay, markings on the face of the board are soon eliminated with bead and cove. The face mark(red line), does help orienting strips, top to bottom when routing. I do this on both ends. The slanted marks are just on one end.
