In May I ordered a new Swift Prospector 16 to be picked up at Algonquin Outfitters @ Oxtongue Lake. I almost wrecked in a down pour on the 401 in Kingston, but after that it was an easy drive up 62. I picked up the canoe and drove back to Rock Lake Campground for the evening.

I got an early start at the put in and paddle down to the bottom of Pen Lake.
This is the route I had planned. The only difference in the paddling of it, I stayed two night at 3 instead 4 and only one night @6

I was greeted on Welcome with a broadside wind, but I liked the way the Prospector handled the waves. Head winds on Harry and broadside again on Rence. This pic is paddling up to the Carry to Frank Lake

Next day was the toughest, a 1725m carry into Louisa and then a 1460 into North Grace Lake. The reward was great. One of the nicest campsite I've stayed at. A lagoon trim with Cedar trees, a great stone patio to the south another to the NW, with a very clean well structured fireplace.

I spent day 4 there also with a nap in the morning and another in the afternoon and a little Spam on the Kelly Kettle.

The next day I paddled up to Bonnechere, another great site at the north end of the lake with Cradle Lake on the other side.

I finally found a working canoe rest on the way to Bonnechere.

On the 715m Carry from Kirkwood to Pardee, I ran into a bear in the trail. Fortunately he knew what to do even before I got the 'Oh crap' out. I watched him, (ok it) run up the hill realizing the bear spray was in the other bag at the take out.
Made it to Head Lake and gave up the 'Falls' site to a group of girls who I beat to the campsite on Bonnechere. They wanted to swim in the clear waters of Cradle Lake and wanted no part of swimming with a creepy old man around.
My site on Head was as bad as the one on Grace was good. A 30-40˚ pitch up to the fire 'pit' that sat 20' above the lake. The half rotten Thunderbox was another 180 feet beyond (all uphill) that and you had to use it with care or you and the box might end up in the lake. This contributed to all the toilet paper around the site, far more then any other site and that's why I only stayed just the one night.
Things were going well on Head Creek thorough the first 3 carries and then there was a broken beaver dam leaving a minefield of rocks just after that carry. The banks were over grown and I couldn't get out. I had to drag my new canoe and bags over and around the rocks. That carry needs to be extended about 200m.
A bit of a head wind on Lake Of Two Rivers and I couldn't pass up the beach below the bike path on the west side of the lake.

Pulled into Rock Lake SP just after 1PM to an absolute zoo of people. In eight days I had only had about a half conversation with all the paddlers I met. These people had no clue what they were doing. Stuffing huge rented Frost River packs unsure all of them would fix in the canoes they had. I had reservations back up a Pog Lake but stopped first for a meal that someone else cooked

Had to tie off to the car
I had a very mellow ride home, something about that much time in the woods by yourself. I stopped in Herkimer NY and bought SWMBO some diamond ear rings and a necklace.

sounds like a great maiden voyage with the prospector. I probably woulda' introduced myself to the girls as uncle pervy and told them my eyesight wasn't what it used to be and to pay me no mind while I get a big fire going so they could warm up and dry off after a swim in the cold water...

So you've never been to Algonquin? It would take a long time to collect enough firewood to make a big fire. Most of these sites are picked clean.

I tried to use Google Pics for this one will it go to Google if you click on the box?

Nice trip sweeper. I can't wait to see the new prospector. I last wandered through that area (from Smoke L.) about 20+ years ago, so I'm not completely familiar with it. I do remember a waterfall helping me to sleep one cold night (it was October after all). No young women anywhere. We had the entire route to ourselves. Too bad about the tp nonsense. Far too much of that along with junk and litter. But if you can get past all of that there's a pretty park to be explored. Oh, and by the way, although we may smoke your cigs and drink your beer, watch your movies and buy your stuff, we still have our very own PPs and even an occasional NP, but not a single SP. Not yet.(lol) You saw the crowds but I'm glad you found some peace and quiet, and hope you'll return to find more. Looking forward to seeing the photos. Thanks for this TR, I'm enjoying it.

ps . Are the diamond ear rings and necklace some kinda guilt thing because of the lovely Naiads or are you one of those thoughtful husbands I've heard tell about?

The tp was bad and in all the sites. A lot of people don't like to use the deteriorating thunder boxes and there's no excuse for taking a pair of dumps right below the Portage sign. That group on girls were the next ones behind me there. I'm not sure I'd bring my wife up there to paddle.

SP=Start Point

They are Herkimers https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herkimer_diamond so they weren't all that expensive, but she want something made from the ones we found. These are cut, mounted and larger.

Nice photos, thanks for those. SP=starting point. oh.
Yes, there's no excuse for the lazy slobs and their senseless selfishness. Don't get me started.
Glad the weather smiled on you. It's been a wet and wild summer up here.

Glad you got those photos on here, Sweeper... some nice clean color in those, green canoe, vegetation, campfire flames. I was through the area many years ago and missed seeing the Galipo river, looks very nice with all that newly-grown vegetation.

Got all the photos this time so thanks for sending them all a second time; I only saw two as well in your first attempt. Looks like a nice trip and wonderful new craft to explore the backcountry in. Hope it gives you many wonderful trips in the years ahead.

That's all for now. Take care and until next time....be well.

Yup, Thanks for making the extra effort, very nice pics and your canoe looks like a real tripper, very nice. Enjoyed the write up

Thanks

I really like sitting further off the center of the canoe then in my Keewaydin, but it's a big boat for a solo and I doing a lot better in the Kee after the Allagash trip.

I now have two light weight tandems which I will take advantage of this weekend taking my wife and two step daughters to the ADK for a short basecamp trip.

I've been working to have enough equipment on hand to put four people into the backcountry, this canoe just about finished it. Then there's the back up sleeping bag I just figured out the zipper is broken.
