Sierra Trading Post

Do you think they're serious? I've been an STP regular for years, and I can't recall ever ordering anything with less than a 20% coupon, and that would have to have free shipping, chocolate sprinkles, whipped cream and a cherry. I'll bet they back off, TJX overlords or no.

I don't know about the catalog business, but their local store has gone to the dogs since the buyout. Haven't bought anything there in a couple years - mostly because they just don't have much of anything in the way of outdoor gear anymore. It really is nothing more than a glorified clothing store with a few added outdoor trinkets.

Count me as an early buyer at least 25+ years ago.

The corporate ownership has really turned things in a new direction. They track and penalize your returns if you exceed a certain percentage. The offers are much less frequent and the gear selection has diminished and is much more mainstream than years past before the buyout.

The reality is that sportswear is much more profitable and reaches a much wider audience than even the small boating, hiking, camping crowd, outdoor gear, etc...also know that the blast and cast king, Cabelas, has also changed hands in the last year or so.

I guess it's an opportunity for some other retail/online business to seize the opportunity and pick up the slack from STP. I hope that someone does.

Long time customer of STP since the days of their cheesy cartoon catalogs. I've gotten some great deals over the years. In 2004, when I was driving from Connecticut to California to pick up my outrigger canoe, I stopped in the Cheyenne, Wyoming, headquarters store to pick up a LaFuma recliner that I had pre-ordered at a great price. It, and its successor, have been in my van ever since.

Virtually all good companies get worse in product, service and price when acquired by big ones. Anyone remember Mad River Canoe? Dagger Canoe? Blue Puma?

Never knew there was a store in Cheyenne.....we stop at the one in Cody every year on our way out of Yellowstone. The "deals" for outdoor gear seem to be declining, but we manage to find a few gems in each trip. Smart Wool socks are a staple! Now that you mention it, the sales seem to be less frequent.
If you make it to Cody, Buffalo Bill's museum is worth a stop....IMHO!

Same story here. Used to get some good deals and bought a lot from them years ago. Now, the deals aren't there and they don't have what I'm looking for. It's too hard to wade through all of the stuff that they have in the hope that they might have something that I want.

I went to the Cody store a couple of weekends ago, and they were "switching out" their gear for fall. That makes sense, except I was hoping to buy a stuff sack and a mug for backpacking. Those aren't exactly the kinds of things that change from summer to fall, at least I don't think they are. The lady said that maybe they'd be on the truck that came tomorrow.
