I spent five days in the William C. Whitney Wilderness working on some personal goals while having opportunity to acquaint with some new folks. I came away with 3 new ponds and 10 new friends. Once again, I was amazed at how comfortable it is to meet new people around a campfire. Young and old, rich or poor, all meet on equal terms. No one talks business and position in life is unimportant. I drove home from this gathering feeling relaxed and glad to be alive, despite the disproportionate number of Red Sox fans in attendance.

I can read this report and see the photos. Did you do something different with Fbook, Paul?

Nope, I have not done a thing. I am guessing Facebook has somehow slowly crept into your personal sphere of dominion.

I don't mean to turn this into a Facebook thread, but we've had a lot of similar issues with linking pictures. I don't think the difference between this report and your Oswegatchie report, for example, is on my end. I believe it has to do with how you are doing the public linking. The addresses have different structures. The link to this thread's report takes me directly to the report, which has a little "public" symbol on in. The link you posted for the Oswegatchie report still takes me to your homepage, where I am blocked from going further.

Lots of fun! Met many new friendly people. We were a bit wind bound I would say from late Saturday afternoon through Sunday around 3 pm when others were leaving before it got nasty in Monday which it never did. We had some rain Monday morning and sprinkles on the paddle out.
I had a case of a cold or allergies. Stuffy nose and cough. Everyone heard the owl Sunday night except for me with clogged ears. Waaaaa

We ate really good also. Matza ball soup, cheese and a type of sausage, steak ( Eddie and George) and Bruce made a pot roast in his new Dutch oven.

Thanks to Robin for setting it up.
Pictures soon. Can't wait to go tripping again. My friend Mike went on his first ADK canoe trip and he portaged over a few beaver dams. All fun.
Health and happiness to all.

it was good to meet ya Conk. Wish i could have spent more than one night. I did not get a chance to make to site 12 as the wind was nasty Sun.

nice write-up - I really should figure that facebook thing out to comment. I noticed in the group around the campfire photo another gamma lid equipped canoe bucket. I had never seen these till my Quetico trip and that fellow had made web harnesses for them. I finally got around to making them (4 years!) and hope to put a how to video together for others.

So does the bucket's owner use it just like a bear can or like a food bag?

I wouldn't depend on it being Bear proof but for the smaller critters such as racoons and chipmunks, yes. According to Cliff Jacobson, if you hide your food in the woods where nobody camps then bears will not find it, just make sure you can,. I can fit 2 laying on their side in a Duluth pack.

Sounds like a good time was had by most. I was on LTL the last week in Sep for 3 nights on site 2 and it was flat calm for 4 straight days!! Luck of the draw.
Regards to all,
Dave

I don't depend on the gamma lid bucket for waterproofness or bear proof ness
It's work for raccoons so I am fine taking mine in the Everglades its rodent proof.
Cross thread it a little or lose the o ring and you lose watertightness.
I've done that

Sit on it and it may become difficult to unscrew. It makes a lousy plate holder but fine 4 bottle holder
I can plonk one coffee cup in the middle

The wind was a pain, but the temps where warm, lots of showers. I really enjoyed the gathering, lots of fun conversation, the food was outstanding...thanks coldfeet, bcelect and Forest Runes. I gained weight. When the conditions got worse the conversation picked up and we had so much fun. Old canoe tripping stories of mishaps and fun, a non stop discussion on old movies we liked and remembered, everyone was a tripper and really added to the enjoyment.
I got to meet and spend a night campsite with Seeker (Al) and his Chum which I restored. Very nice, outstanding outfit with a Walen tent..
I met Conk and had some really interesting conversations about the area with him. A highlight of my ADK paddling history. I was happy he joined us and was even more happy when I saw how much he enjoyed the group. Great guy.
I met Riverstrider (Chuck) again after too many years, his stories around the campfire where interesting and funny, we all enjoyed his presence.
Forest Runes and his paddling partner George showed up and we had a great time listening to them recall past trips together in the ADKs and Maine. George is an outstanding campfire cook, just ask him, he will agree....haha Great guys to have in camp!
Our new friend 3Geese showed up and we all admired her grit, She has a wealth of paddling history, along with her western outdoor adventurers, the real deal and she was a lot of fun during less than ideal conditions.
bcelect (Bruce) showed us what a Great guy he is again, his pot roast for two nights was a huge hit. He replaced the batteries in my headlamp cause I dropped the ball without a moments hesitation, he told us what a beaver dam looks like from underwater...haha, and he amazed us with his powerful stroke paddling out. Another great tripping partner.
Sorry I missed solopaddler and hidden_lo, the wind played havoc with making it to other sites, sorry.
Coldfeet (David) and his buddy Mike showed up and really brightened up the site. Matza ball soup is so good, and with the rain and wind even better. Buttermilk pancakes where excellent. Mike was really a hit during the "old movie" trivia discussion Sunday night.
All and all a great time, Thanks my friends.

Look like it was a great trip!! Wish I could participate in such gathering...
Maybe one day!

Thank you to Robin for arranging this great trip! I had an absolute blast. It was great to see both Robin and Paul (Conk) after so many years. It turns out that Jules (3Geese) and I have a few mutual friends. I have yet to meet any canoe-folk that aren't quality people to hang around with and do nothing, and this trip was no exception. bcelect, coldfeet, Forest Runes, Seeker, 3Geese, George, Mike: it was great to meet you all and I look forward to some day running into you all again! And sorry about Nate...my bad. It seems that he didn't dampen anyone's enthusiasm, and even after they calmed down a bit his winds got Jules and I to the take-out in just a little over an hour despite doing about as much ruddering as paddling. I'll post some of my better pics later on.

-rs
