Be sure you get the most current maps available. When I paddled the Yukon, many of the topographic maps, both in Canada and Alaska were hopelessly out of date and especially in the more complex portions of the river the actual river had no resemblance to the map in major ways. Reliance on the old maps will result in confusion and bad or non existent route choices. We witnessed active undercuts and earth falling into the river making significant changes to the channel flow and landscape as we passed by. I found fairly recent Google Earth images to be the most helpful in planning my best competitive race route map. Even those showed large changes from year to year.
