My Father-in Law survived the Baton Death March, and then spent nearly four years in a Japanese prison camp, until the end of the war. One of the worst prison camps the Japanese operated. I only knew him for the last 12 years of his life. Screwed him up beyond belief.

Anyone, repeat ANYONE, who has survived being a POW, and can return to civilian life without being bat **** crazy, deserves and has earned my respect.
Irrespective of politics.
