Hello everyone,

I have built myself a new canoe seat in ash wood.
The “old” one was just good enough for the experimental time until the new one was ready. It was just a makeshift solution.

But now I have a solid and beautiful new canoe seat in ash with the beautiful wickerwork.

just have a look.

Yes, exactly! A port and a starboard seat in one ...

With the “old” seat, I had simply attached two pieces to the left and right of the middle seat.
BUT - on trips lasting several days, I had the problem that I was sitting on the wooden plank and my small, bony bottom quickly became sore.

As I only paddle solo and therefore always sit on the inside edge of the boat, this made the most sense to me.
When the water gets a bit crabbier, I kneel down anyway ... so I don't need a comfortable, middle sitting position.
So I hope that the new seat will be a blessing for my backside.

maybe it shouldn't be called a seat but rather a bench ... ;)

I have corrected the title to: new canoe bench in ash wood

as the “Wilma” has wide hips (91cm wide) - it is difficult to paddle sensibly in the middle seating position.
On calm water I always slide to the side of the bench seat, close to the gunnel. This also means that the Wilma is easier to steer.

On faster-flowing water with difficulty levels of 2 and more, I adopt the kneeling position to have more responsiveness and stability.

Very impressive, Herr DIY; yet another practical and aesthetic piece of homemade gear.

Well, it's a canoe bench seat as opposed to a canoe bucket seat. A padded bucket seat might be more comfortable for a bony bottom, but wouldn't allow shifting over to the gunwale.

@Glenn MacGrady

Many thanks for your praise. (y)
That's the beauty of being able to build things yourself - exactly the way you need them - and if it also looks good, all the better.

@lowangle al

in my consideration of how normal chairs with such a weave are built, I came to the conclusion that it makes perfect sense to build two individual seat segments for the bench. The fact that this also reduces the sag of the seat is a nice side effect.
