Kind of a fun (or nerdy) analysis that concludes that you're generally better off in the bow during a pandemic since even at canoe speeds airborne germs from the bow paddler can reach the stern paddler.

Even more generally it's not a bad idea to try to stay upwind when you are near other people. If you do a Google search you'll quickly find that there is nothing magic about the 6 foot social distance guideline and the experts say further apart is better and wind has an influence. I think the 6 foot guideline is based on an indoor (still air) assumption of how far a sneeze carries before gravity wins.
We've had a lot of windy days since the pandemic started and I've been more conscious about wind direction when I'm outside near other people.
