Just joined the CanoeTripping site. Been too long since my last canoe trip, but am hoping to get out more in the future.

Hi Odyssey....well, just kinda getting back into the paddling. My favorite destination, and the only one where I've done any long range tripping, is Quetico....been up there 6 times, the last being a 132 mile trip over 12 days....covered a lot of water on that one. Here in WV I do little day trips...Monongahela River, Potomac, Cacapon....been a long time since I was on the Cacapon. Some Cheat...I'm not a whitewater boater so much....used to do the Cheat Narrows in canoe years ago, but that was when my brother lived in town and he had the whitewater fleet! Hoping to buy his Sawyer Cruiser from him in the coming weeks and do more lake paddling. You?

Hi Chris, that was some serious driving up to Superior, and some nice paddling too! I'm pretty sure we've seen a couple of your home State rivers, but only from a car confined distance. We have lost ourselves on backroads, cooled our feet in streams, and sat in the shade of lonely crossroads. It would be nice to paddle some of the waters you mention.
Here, my wife and I trip in Algonquin Park mostly, and day paddle around our province. There's no end of opportunity.

Odyssey, I've never been to Algonquin...would like to try that sometime....much closer to home than Quetico! The terrain on the east shore of Superior had much more relief than I expected....same in Algonquin? The friend who lent me his Swift Winisk heads up to Lake Saries (sp?)..to the west of Algonquin...not in parkland, just hits some river/lake systems. I was looking at Kipawa ZEC....thoughts on that? WV is one beautiful place for boating, hiking, biking, XC skiing, camping and old time music....you should try it out for a week or so sometime!

The area you explored east of Superior is the Algoma region.

Beautiful country, I need to see more of it, but that's a big region.
The hills of Algonquin aren't quite so dramatic, but fantastic to hike, particularly in the fall.
The area your friend heads to, west of Algonquin PP is the Almaguin Highlands.

I've heard some of Kipawa, but not visited yet.
I'd like to return to WV to explore more...and yes, I dig that old time music.

Looking at the Sand River trip.....take the rail from Sault Ste. Marie to a drop off point, paddle to Superior.....tons of portages, but sounds like many of those rapids are runable with the right boat/experience. The Agawa River trip looks nice, too! Regarding Algonquin....what is the motor usage situation up there? Quetico has a few motor routes on the big lakes, but once past the border lakes, not much motoring allowed. I remember my dismay at a trip years ago where I didn't realize there was motor use.....bummer!!!! You play an old time music? I'm a fiddler/mando/guitar guy.

Welcome Chris,

I used to live in Baltimore, MD before moving back to Michigan and had the opportunity to take some short trips on the Susquehanna River, Potomac River, Big Gunpowder Falls River, and then the South Branch of the Potomac by Romney, WV thru the Gorge. I know most of those are hours away from you but those are what I got to experience out your way. Did a lot more Hiking than Canoeing in WV in areas like the Dolly Sods. Which is unfortunate.

Hi Chris, Welcome.

I did a route in ZEC Kipawa maybe 10-12 years ago. I enjoyed it, but on the bigger lakes there where a few motor boats. Once you portage you leave them behind, pretty much like most of the north.
ZEC Kipawa required some more homework than say a trip to Algonquin, it's not as well organized and some of the routes had clear cuts on them. Logging is part of the ZEC. The best thing I did was call before I left and got a lot of information from them. (http://zeckipawa.reseauzec.com/en/canoe-camping)
I would go again, I saw one other canoe and had the place to myself after the first day.

Here's my old Trip Report
