clip-on telephoto?

I have very nice everything-proof camera. Even I can't wreck it. Problem is it's only 4X zoom and wildlife never comes over and poses for me. So I was thinking about those clip-on zoom lenses for smart phones and wondering if I could rig one onto my camera. Then I thought about connecting the camera to some binoculars. Weight is a serious consideration so so standard solutions are generally too heavy. Has anyone tried anything like this?

Take a look at the diameter of lens on a phone and the lens on your stand alone camera. No way is a clip on telephoto lens designed for a phone going to cover the lens of your camera. In any event, the telephoto clip on lenses for phones are pretty limited Usually 2x and not very sharp (the clip on macros are generally a bit better). I don't think shooting through binoculars is going to work either. Get a 30x zoom camera (probably won't be bigger than your 4x camera) and leave the 4x camera and the binoculars at home to save weight.

Weight is a serious consideration so so standard solutions are generally too heavy.

Some of the pocket travel cameras are light and compact... Sony's HX99, currently being hyped as the most compact, weighs in at 240 grams and easily pocketable. Telephoto image quality isn't bad for something so small, check the detail on this 720mm telephoto shot, eg. the chain links and facial features.

These won't be waterproof or shockproof like the other so you'll have to be careful...HX99 is $450 in the states.
