Good tutorial. I've tried making some of my own carbon shafts with hit and miss results. I usually use aluminum tubing as the mandrel and have done it by using the plastic sheeting as a barrier as well as just wax and PVA. The wax and PVA is ok for short shafts and the plastic sheeting worked better for longer shafts (over 1.5' or so).
The heat shrink tubing gives a really nice finish but, if I remember right, it's even more expensive than the carbon sleeve and it can be difficult to get into place over longer shafts when goopy with resin. I also have some heat shrink tape that sometimes works good and other times not so good. It's hard to heat it evenly with a heat gun and I don't believe it holds the tension so good when used that way. It's made to go in an oven.
For the small amounts of tubing I use I'm usually happy to go the cheap and easy route and just use aluminum instead.
