Question inspired by a recent post: For those who take their dogs on canoe trips: do you rig anything up in the canoe to give your dog shelter from the sun/rain?

The most I've ever done for my dog was making the spray cover over the front pack a little longer than needed to provide a porch. Not much protection from sun or rain but a little. But mostly she has to suffer through whatever I have to suffer through. I've been leery about rigging up any sort of real protection for her in case it would lead to entrapment during capsize or make recovery more difficult.

Alsg,

like me the picture i showed before, the simple tarp is a great idea, but my dog hates it ... so like Alan, my dog suffers through all I have to. My Vizsla does not have an under coat, so when wet, if windy can get very cold. I have a rain resistant coat for him as well as a wool coat for him to sleep in if things get real cold. I have had to stop paddling and let him get into the water to cool off on real hot days when the sun is beating down on him with no wind. However, it would seem paddling in June on days that are not real windy are rare events for Jake and I.

My black lab seemed perfectly happy to endure any weather and the most I ever had to do was brush snow off of her as it accumulated. Now we have a coonhound mutt with no undercoat so I'm keenly interested in this topic because this dog gets cold and shivers and does not like to wear a coat. When she wants to get out of the sun she just sticks her head and shoulders under my seat.
