Yesterday I started to build the deck for the Rob Roy AKA the Satan Boat. Of course it failed, why wouldn't it, it's the Satan Boat! Today I revisited the deck project and got it done with some twists and turns and of course some new challenges to examine and overcome. The good thing was I got to do some more steam bending which I actually enjoy! Mostly so I can take a break while waiting for the steam and have a can of liquid courage to see how things are going to go astray! If you care to waste a few minutes of your life scroll down to today's date on my blog:

I've included four short videos of the way it unfolded, they kind of tell the story. Not a bad way to wile away a nice almost summer like day!

You know all all this sun and 84 degrees fried my brain.. Off I went to your blog to find out what I might be able to do with our dock which is too high. Its made for powerboats

I have been enjoying you write up of the Satan boat! I always get a few chuckles. Thanks for continuing with the blog.

The amount of arch in the deck plate created just by steaming, without any bending pressure applied, is astounding. It appears that it arcs with the grain, not across it. That might be something to remember is you need to steam bend a similar sized piece of wood into a convex or concave shape.

And I suppose you could also cut the board with the grain running the other way and arc it from end to end instead of sideways.

As usual with this project modifications seem to be endless. What I think will work doesn't and of course that requires some down time with a can of liquid courage to figure out what the heck is next. Today's effort was no different then the last....year??... of figuring this out. If ya care to waste some precious minutes of your life here's what I came up with for the deck. Scroll down to 4/18 through the 22nd.

Finally passed another hurdle on this build. Today I got the deck installed. There is one last thing to do but that will wait until July sometime. In essence this project is done. With all the lessons I've learned I am really thinking about re-doing the gunwales and deck next winter when I have a new shop...with heat! I'd really like to fix all the mistakes I made. Tomorrow I pick up the next project. A long story but I'm getting from a friend a Bell Mystic he can't bear to look at anymore. There's damage which I haven't seen yet but what the heck, it's free and a sweet boat.

If ya care waste some more time off your life here's the link, just scroll down to today's date:
