Axes!!

I just tried the link and it worked for me? It's the magazine Wild Northerner, seems to come from the Sudbury Ontario area.
It's an article written by a guy who hunts and fishes, and swears by his new fiberglass handled axe.

Ok, I'll try differently... It says I need flash player... That I have... Weird!

Nice article. Some of those bushcrafter guys seem a bit over the top but Paul seems to have a good down to earth and practical outlook on it.

Never tried one myself but I've heard really good things about those Fiskars axes. Most people seem to think they compare very favorably, if not better, than the higher end traditional axes. The price is hard to beat but it's too bad about them being so dang ugly.

I sold my GB axe since I hardly ever used it. Maybe I'll pick up cheap Fiskars and see how it does.

I have a couple fiskars axes. For the money I have no complaints. The handles are very tough. They don't hold nearly as good an edge as my council tools axe, but it also doesn't take much to put an edge back on them. The fiskars only go on camping trips where other non axe owners go along. It doesn't bother me then if they bury the head in the dirt or overstrike it. I have one of their splitting heads in the longest handle they offer. I use it to split all my firewood at home.

Fine working axes for the money, but they don't feel right like an oiled hickory handle.

I found the first article very good and concise. The magazine not so much. Seems to be a blog rather than a "how to"
I was enticed by the article about photographing the night sky and found very little hints

Paul Kirtley knows his stuff, and is a good teacher.

The magazine article comes across as a paid advertisement. There is no question there are better axes than a fiskars. Budget axes that I wouldn't pay more than $40 for. But, for a budget axe they are the best of the bunch.

I have a few firskas axe, they are great, they sure don't feel like my GB or my Weterlings, but like Muskrat, I bring one along on trip when I know people that are on the trip have no clues!! They come on sale all the time and for the price, as a low maintenance, trow it and leave it in the truck kind of axe they are great!!
They are really popular axe up here, that is what my wife switched to in her outdoor head program for trips, she brings them home once or twice a year so I can put an edge back on them and they are good to go!!
