Hi all,

I did a short loop out of the Tim access point in August. It wasn’t meant to be short, in fact it was supposed to be my big solo for the year, but I ended up falling way behind schedule and cutting it short thanks to some poor planning on my part. If you’re a fan of shallow rivers and alder nightmares, this is the report for you.

Low Water & High Alders: Falling short on the Nipissing River

A three day canoe trip along the Nipissing River. Includes Tim Lake, Loontail Creek, the Tim River and all the alders. All of them.

An enjoyable write-up about a mostly unenjoyable trip. I don't like tortuous, narrow, shallow streams between alders or mangroves either.

How much does that SOF canoe weigh? Were you worried about the skin being punctured by side branches or hard things 'neath the shallow waters?

The canoe is light, just under 30 lbs. the skin is ballistic nylon and it’s tough as nails. I ran it over all kinds of pointy crap on that river and didn’t so much as dent it.

So far that’s the only section of the nipissing i’ve done. I guess the good news is that there’s nowhere to go but up from here!
