This past Friday two of my buddies arrived from VT to help me build a new workshop. A third friend joined us on Sat and Sun to help as well. I had built the floor ahead of time so we began putting the rest of the shop up. We worked for eight hours on Friday, a half day, fourteen hours on Sat and seven hours on Sun before they all had to leave. We managed to get up the walls and all but two of the metal roof sheets. Some dumb arse order two short or that would be done.

The new shop is sixteen by twenty which may seem small to some but fits my needs and budget. I can't believe how quickly this went up and am quite please with it. Far from being done. I have a lot of finish work to do, insulate it and hopefully run real electrical out instead of an extension cord. I think the worst part was straddling a metal roof to put on the ridge cap which I still have to finish once the last two roof sheets are on. Next weekend another buddy is coming up from Mass to help put four windows in. We decided this past weekend to focus on getting the shed built and the windows could added later. Kinda arse backwards but we were on a timeline.

The two pics are what we started with to what we ended up with! Not bad for a bunch of old men over a work marathon weekend. Here's a link to pictures as well.

I've been following your build. You are definitely using beefer wood then my 2 x 4's! Also, it was 70 degrees here over the weekend! Looks like the pitch on your roof is about the same as mine!

Must be a popular size ! I helped my Oldest son build a 16' x 20' storage shed. It had to match his house according to the land owner association.
We installed one walk in door, and a roll up door. The roll up door went up easy, and takes less space. Down fall, it's not insulated.

8-12 pitch, R40+ in the roof and R32 in the walls, I built it around a timber frame I made, so quite a bit different build for sure! But some time I think I should have gone simpler....

Nice job getting all that done with some very motivated friends...! You're lucky to have such hardworking talented friends to go all in with you on the build out. Fine looking building that you'll have many hours of fun in once it's completed. Did you ever figure out who it was that short ordered the roof material

I think all of us at one time have sketched out a dream shop...I certainly have. I need more land to put mine on, but am careful not to think too aloud as my wife quickly shoots down the 'day room' idea on the side of the main shop, as soon as I talk about it (1/2 bath, fridge, bunk bed, desk, music, fridge and heat)...more or less I suspect I'd be living out there at some point, so might as well plan ahead for that day! My friends in the country are careful not to invite me over, as I might stay a spell!

It was me who read off the list wrong while ordering. I had printed out the list which was small print and my eyes aren't what they used to be. Picking up two more pieces and a section of ridge cap and should have it done by Fri if I can find someone to help me out.

That is an awesome couple day’s work. Major props to you and your builder buddies (less to the math challenged guy ordering the wood and metal roofing materials). So close to being weatherproofed. . . . . .

Compared to your old added-onto-chicken-coop shop shed, with wind whistling through the walls, the new place will be man cave shop boat work heaven. You’ll be able to work on canoes without exclaiming “This is stupid, I can’t feel my fingers”. My all time favorite video of DougD in the shop:

I love the initial “This is stupid, I can’t feel my fingers” commentary, but the frostbreathy “Ow” exclamation at 6:10 when your burn your frozen digits with the heat gun is worth waiting for. My all time favorite DougD narration occurs at 13:15

Never change Brother, but I see you working in a warm, well-built shop this winter, with less mumbling “I can’t feel my freakin’ fingers”.

A little more ridge straddle for the roof missing pieces, some window and door installation, some hearty insulation efforts, heat source powered up and then the really fun part starts – some strategic organization before building benches and putting tools back in is beneficial cogitation for future conveniences.

Are you going to wire it with at least a couple above-bench-height electrical receptacles?

Will the door be wide enough to carry (or cart, drag) in a 36” tandem canoe without awkward sideways solo finagling?

Shelving?. Cabinets for dust free storage?. Pegboard for visible handtool hanging or ?

Overhead lighting in/on the ceiling? They all laughed when I put seven duplex 48” fluorescent fixtures in my 24x29 shop. If one fixture goes out that space now seems dim to me. Plus more direct, aim-able lighting on the benches as a boon for small parts work or the sides of boats.

I mentioned this is a previous shop outfitting thread; it is future advantageous to pencil mark the center of every wall stud and ceiling joist. Floor to ceiling, and across joists, I don’t care if there are on-center pencil lines everywhere; I wish I had done all of the walls and ceiling before I put anything else inside.

You’ll never have to stud-finder that wood again. That is much easier to do before you begin to excitedly install benches and shelving, and still have an empty canvas to scribe without obstructions.

And of course, the most critical element, where would at waist level will the beer fridge be most convenient?

I’m looking forward to some warm and toasty video of you working on the Mystic this winter. And then get working on that unicorn-rare carbon Stowe Prospector. That canoe needs to see the light of day again soon.

Well, I picked up the last two pieces of roofing as well as the ridge cap. No pickup truck and I needed them home today as I'm going to have help tomorrow to put them up so it was up to the car roof racks. The guys in the lumber yard must have thought I was crazy. We lifted the two pieces on and a few minutes later and older guy walks up with an 8' 2x4 and tells me to lay it length wise before strapping the sheets down. He says as he walks away, "It'll help keep it from shaking like an old woman's teat without a bra." The young guy and I started laughing like heck. And it did help quite a bit.

So tomorrow it the roof will be done and then I need to tackle trim and eves to tighten it all up before the weather really turns and this weekend . dang, it is nice to have the shell up! Also this weekend 4 windows are going in!
