Lows lake Lower Dam repair project

I was lucky enough to paddle the area the second year it was open to the public, well before it became such a zoo. Wife and I spent 5 days there and only spotted 2 other boats.

    Outdoor confidence

My most immediate issue is adjusting my plans to account for an age-related decline in ability. I know what I'm doing, I have the experience and knowledge. I'm just not as capable as I used to be. Getting old sucks.

Do you bring an ice chest or cooler?

For short trips, I have a small round cooler that was designed to nest inside my food barrel. I pack it with frozen food and eat as things thaw. For longer trips, larger soft-sided coolers seem to work well.

"Sleigh riding" big swells in OC-6 outrigger canoes

Looks like a blast! Thanks for posting.

    RIP Dan Cooke

I had a couple of brief conversations with Dan before ordering some of his excellent gear. He seemed like a good guy and I like to support small niche businesses. I hope someone continues CCS. And I hope Dan had a good last paddle.

An interview with Garrett Conover, woodsman, author, wilderness canoeist guide.

I love Conover's focus on the old school ways of sustained wilderness living and travel and the development of the skills needed to stay out for long periods of time. While I like to practice the skills, my life (family, work, etc) does not allow the time for long term trips. Plus, as I age...

    Defend your food barrel?

I carry by barrel about 50 yards from camp and tie it loosely to a tree with some paracord. Then I hang a large, loud cow bell from the paracord. The idea (theory; never been tested) being that any creature attacking the barrel would start the bell ringing and either scare them off or wake me...

    Pemican

Does anyone have a good recipe for pemican? I've assembled most of the ingredients that I think I need, but not sure about the portions or if I'm missing something.

    Temagami this July

Just finalized the dates for a one week trip to the Temagami. First time paddling there and really looking forward to it. Going with a paddle buddy. First trip with a partner since my wife "retired" from ground-dwelling, DEET and pooping in the woods. But we're still married. Our current plan...

    Modify a Dry Bag

I have a small daypack size dry bag and I need to attach a water bladder on the front. Thinking of gluing on 4 small D-Rings, but most seem to be on large hypalon or PVC patches (4+ inches - used for inflatable rafts, etc). Anyone know where I can get some small accessory D-Rings or another...

    Experimenting With Ceramic Coatings

Went for a paddle yesterday. No noticeable difference on the water. But the hull cleaned up really easily when I got home.

    Experimenting With Ceramic Coatings

I used 303 for years, really like it.

    Experimenting With Ceramic Coatings

The directions don't recommend multiple coats. The directions don't say anything about multiple coats. I've only used spar varnish on wooden snowshoes, so limited experience. But the spar varnish appears to be thicker and give some protection to the wood.

    Experimenting With Ceramic Coatings

I've been seeing a lot of info about the value of ceramic coatings on cars, boats, planes, etc. My 4 Runner came with a factory applied ceramic coating (so they claim) and the paint does seem to shed water better than a wax. I talked to a body shop owner and he swears by them. Typically I use...

Twig Stoves: Experiences, Opinions and Pictures

Interesting thread. I've been playing around with a Solo Stove. Once it really gets going, appears to work as advertised. But undecided if I would take it on a trip.

    Straps Break?

Thankfully, I've never had a roof rack fail, but I check the mounts regularly.

    Judging a person on appearance

Long story, short. My daughter was invited to go sailing with someone who is a member of a very, very fancy yacht club. I spent the day paddling and drove over to pick up the kid. I'm sitting in my dirty truck in their parking lot surrounded mostly by high end German cars and SUVs when this...

    Straps Break?

Something happened to a friend when he was hauling his canoe down the highway and it got me thinking. He had front and rear straps on the canoe, but no bow line. The front strap broke and the canoe immediately folded around the rear strap, creating a very expensive carbon fiber taco. Ouch! I...

    I finally learned something...

Last season, my lower back started tightening up after about 2 hours on the water. Not enough to stop me, but bothersome enough to make me constantly wiggle around looking for the sweet spot to stop the discomfort. No joy. I would stop and stretch out my lower back, buying me maybe only...
