    Trip Recommendations in Northern Sask

No float plane really limits your options in Northern Saskatchewan, and makes it tough to get away from people. Sounds like you want some whitewater. Something on the Churchill corridor would probably work, like the Weaver River. It’s a short shuttle from Missinipe to where you start and you’d...

Looking back on 2024 and what’s ahead for 2025

2024 was pretty decent, took the family on the Bloodvien for 2 weeks in July and solo circumnavigated Lac La Ronge in September. Both trips were great, and both surpassed my expectations. 2025 will hopefully see the family heading to a mountain river in the Yukon and maybe a solo trip on...

New Swift Tandem - Lavieille 17-6

Not a fan of the specs, seems undersized.

    RockSTAR or SRT?

Better add the Caribou S on there too!

The New Swift/DY Redesign of the Dragonfly

Esquif and swift need to hook up. I’d buy it if it were made in t-formex.

Kayak vs Canoe - Your Personal Pros and Cons

I am a diehard canoer, but.. Kayaks have made heading deep into the woods possible for my family with 3 kids. We managed for a few years when they were super young to squeeze into our 18’6 MacKennzie and do some 2 week trips but eventually it was just too much and we bought our first kayak, a...

Fond Du Lac River, Saskatchewan (and rivers like it)

Pretty sure non residents of Canada need a permit to camp on crown lands, it’s like 10$ a night. The chance of running into anyone enforcing it up there though would be slim but you never know, there’s COs and RCMP stations in Stoney.

Fond Du Lac River, Saskatchewan (and rivers like it)

2 weeks on the FdL is basically the trip Archer describes in her book with a flight into the outlet out of Wollaston to where the river dumps into Black Lake. Another option is to do the Waterfound with a vehicle shuttle into Waterbury lake and then a plane pickup at Black Lake. You could also...

Fond Du Lac River, Saskatchewan (and rivers like it)

Funny enough, that’s not the case now. The best part of the entire trip from LaRonge to Stoney is from Points onward to Stoney. As soon as you turn off from Hidden Bay, the road widens considerably and its well maintained. They’ve put a lot of work into it. The worst section is from Southend to...

Fond Du Lac River, Saskatchewan (and rivers like it)

The Fond du Lac is an amazing river, one of my favourites. It’s a pretty easy river to access and now that the highway between Points North and Stoney Rapids is an easy 2 hour drive, the trip can be done without a bush plane if you’re up to some big lake travel. There’s lots of friendly locals...

    Wood identification.

It would be hard to find a piece of alder that clear, mahogany is a good bet

    Wood identification.

Agreed. It’s used quite a bit in lower end residential construction in western Canada. It does have a different sweet burning smell when working with it. I like to use it in some of my laminations when I build paddles, it adds a nice colour contrast and sands very similar to basswood.

Wollaston or Black Lake to Kasba Lake

I’ve done too much research and not enough action on this exact route and would have to agree that Recpeds route would be the one I would choose. I’ve heard lots stories of the White Partridge River being a canoe eater and that the route leaving Snowbird is a tough go through lower ground with...

What is your least favorite portage?

Did the Methy in 2009 after coming down the Clearwater in super duper high water. The first 5 km out of the valley was an exhausting climb up a steep greasy clay trail rutted up by quads and the remaining 15 km was through ankle to knee deep water again made worse by the quads. Dang near caused...

Novacraft Tufstuff completely worn down hull restore

If you shipped it back to NC for a repair, they would use gel coat, that’s what I’d use as well. It seems that there is a lot of trepidation in applying gel coat when in reality it’s super easy, especially if you spray. The cost and speed of the repair will be lower as well. Once you put epoxy...

    Need More Dad Lore

The Thlewiaza area would be an awesome choice, and could lead you to the ocean via many different routes. There’s so many great watersheds to explore in this area and it can be fairly cheap to get there and back to civilization. My all star trip in this area is Wollaston to Thlewiaza, Putahow...

    Saskatchewan Portage Clearing 2024

They’re all over Canada. Where the pavement ends is usually just the beginning of a lot of our roads.

New gear for 2024 and 2025?

2024 was a pretty normal paddling gear replacement year. I picked up a 30l yeti pack out and a goretex kokatat paddling jacket. I’d been on the fence for these pieces for a while and finally got it done. No regrets on either, both are super good quality and made this years trips much more...

    Hatchet or Saw?

I like my Fiskars brush clearing axe, half axe/half machete. My boys think it’s a great toy and they build some pretty cool forts with it and beating back the bush is a good thing where we trip so I don’t loose any sleep over their maliciousness. Out of the saw and hatchet, if I was just...

Show us pictures of your canoe dogs

“Fizz”, cute but she’s a stone cold killer! Still going strong at 12 years, although we have to pamper her when she’s getting in and out of the boat. It’s definitely her last season working the uplands.
