    basalt Innegra tandem tripper.

Well she not the fairest in the land, but she’s as fair as she’ll be for now. Release attempt scheduled for Monday.

    basalt Innegra tandem tripper.

I haven’t worked with Enough different fabrics to be able to compare the wetting properties of this to something else. The basalt is brown when dry and turns black when it’s saturated. So it’s easy to tell when the basalt is wetted. The Innegra changes it’s tone slightly but it is more difficult...

    basalt Innegra tandem tripper.

The problem with foam gunwales is that they must be built perfectly formed. Wood is naturally a linear material, so it easily curves in a uniform way. Foam is not. There really is not a perfect way, so far as I can tel, to clamp foam to a form perfectly while being able to see if you’re even...

    basalt Innegra tandem tripper.

Made a little progress this weekend. I put down two layers of 7 oz basalt Innegra. Then attached my gunwales while it was still wet. Next ill I’ll put 4 oz s glass over the hull including the gunwales. Oh, and Smoth On epoxy is the only epoxy I’ve ever used since our choices here are a bit...

Here’s one way to blow $600.

All wrapped up. Now I have to wait till my help shows up this weekend. That’ll be the hard part.

    basalt Innegra tandem tripper.

I just pulled the first outwhale off the mold. It appears to have a solid lamination to the foam everywhere. I think it will get a final wrapping in S glass when the boat is done. But right now it weighs 8 1/2 oz.

    basalt Innegra tandem tripper.

It’s a square with the bottom angled at 25 degrees. I can’t remember why that shape is called. And I hand sanded with 60 grit too. I had the same problem on my test section. I think one trick is to get a large enough foam into the sleeve size you are using. Also after I wet it out I massaged the...

    basalt Innegra tandem tripper.

Yep carbon over Foam. Just the outwales for now. It’s just got packaging tape on the hull and the spruce slats. Hopefully that releases. Still waiting on some fabric for the lay up. I’ll do the inwales when I trim.

    Innegra

Basalt is brown when raw and black after it get wetted. So basalt Innegra is really easy to see.

I got started on pre forming my gunwales. So far so good.

    basalt Innegra tandem tripper.

I just got off the phone with an old buddy who is trying to convince me to build a female mold for this project. Anyone care to sway me one way or the other? He is saying if I use the male plug, I’ll be sanding my canoe for a week.

That would look sweet. If I did that, I would probably also do cedar gunwales wrapped in glass sleeve. Originally I wantted to have “no wood and no metal”. Just for bragging rights. I’ve got time to change my mind. You guys are good at making that happen. My wife dragged me to Hawaii with the...

    basalt Innegra tandem tripper.

Well carbon Innegra is certainly less rigid than plain carbon. And Basalt Innegra is certainly less rigid than plain basalt. Basalt is very similar to S glass. The prospector my buddy just finished is 5 layers of 7 oz basalt Innegra with a lot of foam in there. You can really tell where there no...

    basalt Innegra tandem tripper.

Well you guys convinced me to do a foam core floor... I have some 1/2”Divinycell, that’s what the local guys carry. But that seems like a little overkill. And the suppliers down south I’m seeing won’t ship to Alaska(FibreGlast). It seems like the 1/8” would be the only size that’s shippable...

    Great read guys. Thanks.

    basalt Innegra tandem tripper.

Alan, I gues that brings up the whole question of ribs vs. floor insert. I was hoping ribs would be sufficient due to the excessive cost of the foam. I was thinking of using 2” carbon sleeve around the 1/2” foam at whatever width fills out the sleeve. I’ve seen (in pictures only) Kevlar canoes...

    basalt Innegra tandem tripper.

Hey Mike. I read your thread through a couple times. Great build. As far as the order of lay up goes, I was under the impression that the stiffer fabric need to be on one of the outsides of the layup. So either the inside of the canoe or the outside of the canoe would qualify (based on my...
