    Hello from Nashville Tennessee

Welcome! Nice to have another southerner on board. I'm Doc, from Mississippi.

    Dropping in from down under.

Hey there Frogmouth; welcome. This is a good forum for info and insight. Most of the members of this forum seem to be clustered around the USA/Canadian border. Accordingly, they offer the best from their particular paddling culture. I'm from Mississippi and as such represent a very different...

Stuff you take and don't use

My apologies YC, Being 58 with a reconstructed knee a dysfunctional heart valve, and synesthesia I've discovered that less baggage in every arena of life makes good sense for me. I'm an experienced adventurist and am simply speaking from my own experiences. If I've offended you I am sorry. In...

Stuff you take and don't use

I'm with forest rune; been using E.S. White's dictum for years. I have my 3-day 2-night pack at about 8-9 lbs (less consumables). My 6-day pack is around 18-22 lbs. Of course this increases in cold weather by necessity (larger cutting tools and warmer clothes/shelter). Longer trips are...

In the demonstration of the sheer and simple beauty of 'movement' through time and space, this video is pure aesthetic. Thanks; I truly enjoy all your videos. Doc

Poll: How many canoes and kayaks do you now own?

2 canoes, 3 pirogues (my favorite boat to paddle; have built 14), 1 kayak (which went up for sale 2 months after purchase -- can't hold a candle to my pirogues -- IMHO).

    The miracle of new life

Can't locate my bird book but here's the latest happening. I saw the little mama easing into the garage so I laid my arm along the bench edge where she likes to perch before flying to the nest. Sure enough she jumped up on my arm, gave me a nod, then took the food in her beak to her babies. I...

    Twig stove

Jim, I think if you cut a feeder port in the side so that you don't have to remove the pot from the stove to feed fuel into the fire, you'll increase efficiency. Also, a lid on the pot will decrease your boil time dramatically. That is a one good looking piece of kit! What kind of bottom, if...

    The miracle of new life

You`re right on the mockingbird warning, but this is a much smaller bird whose tail resembles that of a mockingbird. I`ll have to look it up in my bird book. She has actually landed on my work bench 15" from my face and has made peace with Pancho, my black lab. Havin` a blast with her and her...

    The miracle of new life

I have a little friend who has made my garagenous zone her abode in which to raise her children. You can`t see her in her nest but she`s in there with her 3 babies. lovely!

Excellent idea Voyager. Wish I'd thought of that.

    Twig stove

Jim, I think you,re on to something there with the 3" burner. Ideal for quick preparation of broths/beverages. Don't know about anything of greater solidity. Experiment and give a report. Sweeper, I tried the kk but found that the coefficient between weight and energy input, to energy output...

No Title Thought I'd show you my "Crown Royal" stick kit. 4" bean can on 4 bolts for stand-offs; alum. ties for pot stand; Stanley pot/lid and generic glacier cup from Wally's (lid fits cup perfectly); tuna can for cup stand on sterno. It all nests together and fits in the crown royal bag...

    Chuck Box anyone?

No Title I know I represent a different paddling culture but I thought you might be interested in a gander at my kitchen. I almost always paddle solo but when I do paddle with others we each do our own cooking so I always use this same kit. The kit includes a stainless steel paint scraper used...

    Adjustable Mini-cell Foam Seat idea

BTW I sleep in my boats quite often. String a tarp over your boat, put in you bedroll, and you' good to go.

    Adjustable Mini-cell Foam Seat idea

No Title You may have no interest in this since I built it for use in my pirogue, but here's a few pics of my paddling seat. The feet are coated in clear rubber so it doesn't slide around and it makes a great camp chair for fire/star gazing.

    Hi, I'm John from Ontario

Just a bit of temptation, John: On a lark, I called Oley (one of my shuck buddies) this past Friday evening and asked him if he wanted to paddle the Ross Barnett Rez with me the next day. He quickly and diplomatically delegated his Saturday chores to the bloodkin within shouting distance. We...

    Hi, I'm John from Ontario

Hey John, come on down to Mississippi. We have unexplored waters (the rivers are always re-configuring the basins), the hospitality is beyond compare, and there is always someone ready to wet a paddle.

Eric Sevareid on double blades in canoe

Well said JagDaddy! I love my self-made single blade; indeed there are tight spots in the southern waters I ply that just cannot be explored by those addicted to a double blade. And moreover, the artistry of the single blade well paddled is nothing less than contemplative. However, when I'm...
