Soloing America's Big Ditch: Open Canoe Style

Mike, let me know when you want to go. I've been wanting to do the Green too.

    NWC Cruiser build

When it comes to Kevlar wet out, I usually just use a squegee, not brushes or rollers. Smear it on thick and quick, no perfection here, and then move to the next section. Give the Kevlar some time to soak up resin while you work on another section and then go back and rework the first part...

    Canoeing myths busted

Hahaha. Good article. I'm definitely guilty of number 5. Just last night actually as we sat on the porch and had worldly discussions. Number 1 also as I look down on my teal carpet that was once shaggy, but after 40 years is now well trodden and maintained at a much shorter level.

    New PFD

I have an Astral YTV. It's also comfortable to the point I don't notice its there. The only exception is the middle of summer, then it gets too hot to forget.

    Carbon vs Kevlar vs Fiberglass

If money is no issue look at the racing canoes, marathon or whitewater, all carbon and foam. But for normal use I agree with Canotrouge.

    Carbon vs Kevlar vs Fiberglass

Just depends on what the canoe is being built for. It's a sliding scale of strength, stiffness, lightness, and expense.

    Gunwales

It should be fine. There's a lot of marathon race canoes without outer gunwales or without any gunwales. A lot of the time gunwales are overbuilt anyway. The Merlin is a pretty little canoe, I'm always suprised we don't see more of them built. Nice job on yours, looking forward to the composite...

    Which modern materials layup?

Charlie, any word on how that M5 will wet out? Specifically, does it fluff up and require vacuum bagging? Also, I haven't found anything on abrasion resistance. It might take some getting used to blue instead of kevlar yellow.

    Mac and Cheese powders?

I haven't tried the cheese yet. I buy powdered egg, spinach, and kale from them. I've heard good reviews about the cheeses.

Ranger interactions – stories good or bad

Good interaction. The same place I was force hiked up the hill, on a different occasion, we had a campsite away from all the others. I was shooting my red ryder at a can in the tree line. I saw the state park ranger pull in a 1/4 mile up and stashed the bb gun. He came up and asked if we were...

Ranger interactions – stories good or bad

Two of us watching the sun set over the banks of the Missouri River. We probably had two beers each. A razorback and local smokey waiting for us at the start of the trail. They inform us that we can't be there after sunset. The sun has set but it was still light at this time. Of course we're...
