That Ruger no 1 of yours should make an excellent buffalo getter. Good luck.

    Hatch

Well Alan, you could always quit canoeing, sell all your stuff, and go to Vegas. Live the bugs life. Mem, what happens if he's picky?

    Mem's making a paddle so do I....

He's got huge, sharp... er... He can leap about... LOOK AT THE BONES! How much does a holy hand grenade of Antioch add to pack weight?

    Mem's making a paddle so do I....

Hahahaha. It just so happens that it's the most efficient shape for two tasks. Alan, did you read the shape of the canoe before you started that? It looks like John Winters' paddle incarnate.

    Epoxy on canvas experiment

I have some of Corey's goop too. Haven't used it yet. It is a two part polyurethane. There's also Gaco Western UA-7090. I don't think those would be the best bet though as they are made to stretch ~300% before breaking. That is great for nylon but too much for canvas. Harder polyurethanes and...

18' Chestnut Cruiser Leader is now a 16' Cruiser Kruger

I haven't had a chance to comment on this yet. This is awesome Robin. It's going to make a great solo canoe. That wannigan idea is also great.

    Classic sheath knife ideas

Aka Green River Hunter. Great knife, but I prefer buying the blanks and making my own handles. I don't know if I'd be comfortable giving a kid a knife without some sort of guard to stop their finger from slipping into the blade. Something to think about.

    Fiberglass hull maint/ freshening?

I use marine wax. Millbrook recommends wax. It can still be paddled across the water. I haven't gotten stuck yet. I'm sure the massive amounts of scratches aren't helping frictional resistance either, but hey, I'm a river guy. 303 is garbage for UV protection, it washes off the second it...

    Classic sheath knife ideas

There's lots of old Western knives on eBay in the $20-40 range. Most are full sized hunting knives so maybe a little big for youngins. Made in Boulder, CO. I've got my grandpas. Great knives for the money with leather handles. It was the quintessential knife of the Western and western Midwest...

    Carbon/Kevlar build

I painted my oar blades with oil based rustoleum. I think I mentioned it somewhere else on the forum, but it took quite a while to fully cure. I used the oars a week after painting them and they chipped very easily. I can't give you a good date on how long it took since I don't use them much...

Passing the time of day .. conversations with other paddlers

Brad or Pblanc, would you keep me/this forum up to date on the rendezvous? I'd like to join up this year, but I rarely go over to paddling.net so I'm usually out of the loop. Also anyone coming through Kansas City on the way is welcome to use my facilities.

    Carbon Copy Kite

If you've got the help you can do one layer at a time. That's how I've done it, and three people is great for rolling out a new layer over wet cloth. With one person rolling out fabric over a wet layer it gets very hard to get the weave lined up right and wrinkle free. If wetting out two layers...

    Hanging seats

Excellent. I'll do that next time. It's always a pain to get everything lined up, and at least one of the bolts seems to always be forced.

With regards to making a one off foam core canoe, I've seen it done well, but can't seem to find it now. I think they were making a small sailboat, maybe an outrigger sailing canoe. Anyway, they cut out their station molds as negatives, so female instead of male. Staple in a series of battens...

Passing the time of day .. conversations with other paddlers

I love meeting people around the water. Without any effort on my part I don't think theres been a time where I haven't talked at length or been offered a beer at a takeout. Who cares if you said something or didn't ask the question. Odds are you'll never see them again, but if you do, correct...

    Carbon Fiber Nokomis

I get my s glass from aircraft spruce. What are the dimensions of it again? My 15.5' x 36" Mattawa is 43 lbs with ash trim, two full layers of s glass and one 9 oz kevlar. I bet you could shave a lot of weight with all carbon, cedar gunwales, and no cedar core. Looking forward to seeing this...

    Ford F-150 still most popular

2003 Ranger 3.0 6 cylinder with a 182,000 miles. Over the last year or so I've had several minor issues: Vacuum leaks, throttle position sensor, pcv tube, coil pack, and one big issue, the computer went out, which I swapped with a used one. Other than those issues it has been trouble free for...
