    Russell Green River Knives

The last sheath I made has a cord to hang around my neck (pictured in the first post). Dangerous in a canoe I know, but I plan to tuck it into my shirt while moving. We'll see how it works.

    Russell Green River Knives

That's probably one of the best Nessmuk knife recreations I've seen based on the illustration and text. We'll never know exactly what he was using. At $150 that's more than I'd want to spend on a tripping knife, but I'd love to own one. Funny how that works, but I try to think of my canoe gear...

    Russell Green River Knives

I've got a sheep skinner blank too. I haven't decided what to do for the handle yet. It's probably the best all around knife for the field as it's blade is thicker than the rest. I've batoned small stuff with the hunter, but I would feel more comfortable bashing on the skinner. I usually have an...

    The Elusive Carbon Beavertail

You can also just order shafts and grips from ZRE and make your own carbon over foam blade. You might as well make two while you're at it and send me one. Also, I think Werner just came out with a couple straight shaft paddles you might like, but they probably aren't as light a zav.

    Russell Green River Knives

I used to like the Mora stainless companions for canoe camping, but in the last year I've made the switch to Green River knives and I can't be happier. They're on par with Moras at about $20 a piece. If you just buy blanks and make your own scales they can be had for $8-15. It's become somewhat...

    Boat paint

I used rustoleum on a couple oar blades, the paint was pretty soft in the beginning and chipped off easily. After a couple months it seems to be much more resilient, so just give it plenty of time to fully cure before you take them out on the water. Folks use that paint on polyester skin on...

    Carbon Fiber Nokomis

Happy new year Jim! You're getting closer and closer to getting it on the water. You might have to take a break. It's going to be almost 60° here Monday. I'm hitting the local creek, hopefully you guys get the same warmth.

    Textreme

What Alan said. It's not a layup it's a brand of carbon fiber fabric. The weave is different because the bundles of fibers are flat strips not round, like tape vs a rope. So, the fibers lie straighter and there's less kinking when they're woven into fabric. When composites fail it usually starts...

    New Canoe in T-formex

I've been putting my Kevlar and glass canoe through the ringer this year, poling up an down a lot of shallow rocky water. It's got a lot of scratches, probably more scratch than unscratched at this point. I have no fear running it down in the Ozarks in 2017. Of course, I don't worry about it as...

    Fish tail propulsion

Harry Bryon has some interesting inventions. I like his wheel barrow dingy that he can roll out when the tide is low too. Also at offcenterharbor.

Trips planned for 2017 What is everyone planning

I want to do the Buffalo this year too. I'm not sure if I'll have time for a week long trip this spring. If not I'll just do my usual long weekenders in southern Missouri and central Kansas.

Canoetripping Woodworkers: Post your scrap wood projects

They're nice trees. Slow growing though. The pollinators go crazy for them when they're in bloom. They make a lot of bean pods if you don't like stuff dropping in the yard.

Canoetripping Woodworkers: Post your scrap wood projects

It sure is. Picture was taken in the spring. I had to trim off a couple dying branches this summer unfortunately.

Canoetripping Woodworkers: Post your scrap wood projects

Give it a try. An old map would be great. A co-worker of mine has awesome handwriting so I had her transcribe a passage from a William Hope Hodgson short story about a marooned ship. It took two bottles to get a clean cut around the bottom so I could put in the lamp fittings. You can see the...

Here's a canoe video to remind you what summer is like

Uncle_Skwid I have the same problem with getting my GoPro knockoff (lovingly called the NoPro) to start recording. It's really hard to see the tiny little front screen when it's mounted behind me on the canoe. If it's mounted to the canoe I really have to get out to start it recording. Even...

Canoetripping Woodworkers: Post your scrap wood projects

Oh, also, not wood scraps, but boat scraps, I made a skin on frame coffee table with some extra polyester fabric and artificial sinew. It weighs 6 lbs. Working on a carbon fiber dining room table right now that will weigh less than 20 lbs.
