    Suwanee

Yep, both are possible with the wife, one only very remotely likely these days. The long trip is more likely to be a solo trip if I do it. I have a past history of doing long solo trips, but the really long ones tended to be bicycle tours. I also have tended to do less long backpacking trips...

Sounds like a good rule of thumb measure. I was planning to bandsaw and run it through the thickness sander if I necessary. I do a ton of resawing to make veneers or close to veneer thickness (most often ~0.090") in making sound boards and other parts for musical instruments and find I can get...

I appreciate you and others taking the time to type long complete comments They are very helpful. All of that makes the case for bead and cove a bit stronger. I was have been considering planing the edges and have still not completely ruled that out, but can see where locking in the edges...

How did you join the short pieces? Join the strips? Join the planks before cutting the strips? Did you scarf them or butt them? Full length scarfs?

Painting a composite boat with an outdoor durable finish sounds like at least one redeeming feature too. I guess that cedar can be painted too, but... On the other hand one of the reasons for considering building in the first place was that I like woodworking.

Perhaps I am wrong. I'll have to make a trip out to look at what the big boxes have. The problem is that I don't think they label most of what they do have as anything more specific that just "cedar". Looking online I do see some listed as "eastern red cedar" and the rest as either just "cedar"...

Wow, with a little walnut to accent it the basswood is really pretty. I could see using other accent woods as well.

I think it is readily available (I have not actually shopped for it here). It is only a little heavier and it is not bad to work with in my experience. It isn't as pretty as cedar. not that that is necessarily a show stopper. It is rated as non-durable for rot resistance, but encased in epoxy...

To be honest I have been social distancing and have not looked in person. My impression based on memory was that what they had was eastern cedar and aromatic cedar. Maybe I need to go look and see. I may be making a problem where there is none, but I did read that the western species wasn't...

    Suwanee

Depending on the put in and take out I have seen 170 miles to 220 miles quoted, but I think the lower number is the commonly run section. Realistically getting my wife out on a 3-4 day trip would be great and even an overnight trip would be a win. She does seem interested, but I have not yet...

    Election Reminder

I have found lots of uses for old political signs. They are pretty strong and light. They are great stiffeners inside of bags or panniers. They can be made into boxes or cases. They are good for forms or templates as was already mentioned. It is a little hard to get them clean of the...

It occurred to me that Paulownia (also known as kiri) might be nice for strips. It is18 lbs/ft3 compared to 23 lbs/ft3 for cedar and its other properties seem reasonable. I have a piece of it that I have left from using it as a tone wood in musical instruments, but it is only 2x6x48 or so. If...

    Suwanee

Yeah, I can see daylight hours being a big deal in winter. I rode my bicycle coast to coast along the southern tier and managed that by going late winter when the days are much longer (my trip was mid Feb - mid Mar). By then the days are much longer than when temperature are similar in early...

    Suwanee

I'd be curious to hear from others who have done the Suwanee (I did read the thread "Upper Suwannee Trip Report, Part 1"). I am wondering about possibly doing it in fall or winter. I like to avoid hot weather and bugs and generally don't mind chilly weather. Are there other caveats I should...

Thanks. I may look into it a little more, especially if I don't find any nice cedar locally or within a days drive.

Strips for Pack Canoe Build in FL Panhandle

I have never seen/handled Divinycell so I don't really have a feel for how "floppy" it is in the sizes of the strips that would be used, but wondered about form spacing possibly needing to be closer. A quick google search didn't yield a lot on usage for canoe building. One picture I saw showed...

I have not considered it. I wouldn't rule it out entirely without consideration, but I am totally unfamiliar with it. How similar is the process?

    Svea 123

I was curious about how the current crop of strike anywhere matches would be, so I ordered some Diamond Greenlight "strike anywhere" matches. I did so partly because I figured they'd be handy and partly out of nostalgia. Well they arrived and they are crap. The sticks are flimsy and break if...

I am in Tallahassee so about a 5 hour drive. It would be a long day or an overnight trip, but not out of the question. If combined with some other trip it would become more reasonable so I'd consider a paddling or other destination in the area. I'll try to find some info on them.

Thanks. I was aware of and use the wood database regularly. Yeah I did mean 3/16" strips. I have no qualms about driving a half day each way to get nice lumber. I have gone farther. As a luthier I have often gone on longer road trips for nice lumber. Pretty much any decent lumber is a couple...
