What to do with the vehicle parked on a long trip?

That reminds me of the time I found a couple twenty dollar bills rolled around the batteries in an old flashlight that used to live in a vehicle of mine years previously. Apparently I or someone on one of my camping trips had hidden them there and forgotten them. My friend Dan was know to do...

    Quality Fishing Knife

I had a similar knife that I carried for work as a computer tech. My employer bought it for me. It saved a lot of trips back to the shop to get my tools. The model I had had a more bells and whistles though. I think it may be around somewhere. These days I have been carrying a Gerber folder...

What to do with the vehicle parked on a long trip?

Back in the day, I usually drove pretty clunky vehicles on most shuttles and I think that helped. I also didn't leave much of value in the car. I have left vehicles for long periods on bike tours and backpacking trips with never an issue. On whitewater day trips I have had a vandalism or...

    Fishfinder Test Paddle (day trip)

Susan and I edited the Gunpowder Gazette for some period. I don't think we kept any issues these decades later. I never received the Smoke Signal, but did have many friends in the MCC. I'll pass on the offer for the moment, but will keep it in mind.

    Soloing while married

The key isn't so much to call home often as to call home more often than you say you will. Set expectations low if in doubt. Oh and use texts and email. They go through quickly and when there is a weak signal.

    Stoves for the backcountry.

I've done plenty of camping where weight carried was not monitored closely too. Much of that we were cooking on an open fire though, but we did carry some heavy cook wear. I haven't done that kind of trip in years, but it would still be fun though.

    Fishfinder Test Paddle (day trip)

I forget who was the ice cream guy or gal. Al Chandler? Warren Therien? Will Gallagher? I bet you could, but that one more than most brings back really old memories of my very earliest paddling days in an old Grumman with a truck tube for flotation no less.

    Dog PFD

Ruffwear are nice as I recall from years ago. Kong also make a nice one. Marley has a Kong and I seems to be of good design and quality. It fits her well, but she has not been in the water with it

    Soloing while married

My wife always supported my trips even multi month ones. The only time it is a problem is when I don't stay in touch enough after setting too high of an expectation. I guess I am super lucky in that regard.

    Fishfinder Test Paddle (day trip)

Strangely I think this picture made me more homesick for the area and the distant past than anything else. I remember many stops there before or after runs on Muddy Creek with good friends that I have lost touch with, and many of whom are no longer with us.

    Stoves for the backcountry.

There is a huge range of what people want or need depending on their usage. I know that I have often gotten to counting grams and used a home made pop can alcohol burner that weighed about an ounce including burner, pot stand, and wind screen (not counting fuel which was usually a 12 ounce...

    Quality Fishing Knife

Enjoy the new IKW. My Rapala has always served me well enough, but a better knife is always nice. A knife upgrade is a joy to have and I am sure the IKW will be a prized possession. Simple edged tools of good quality like good knife are a special joy to own and use.

    Quality Fishing Knife

I might be going off topic here, but I notice you said "fishing knife" and not "filet knife". I always figured that for me a fishing knife was likely to be a more general purpose knife more often than not that I was likely to carry when fishing and a filet knife was a special purpose subset of...

    Footrest question

Mike, so far the seat is either free standing or in one position (a bit far forward maybe) anchored with a notch that sits over the center rib (I haven't yet tried it there). I have a 70# dog that will go along sometimes and a cooler that will go sometimes so I am unsure about locking down the...

    Footrest question

Since you asked... I didn't take many pictures and she isn't much too look at up close :) She paddles real nice and doesn't look bad as long as you stay back a bit. I found that despite being a single blade canoeist I like paddling the pirogue with a double blade paddle. She just feels...

    Footrest question

It isn't exactly a canoe, but I built a 14' pirogue to fish out of. It has a wooden seat that isn't fastened down and is moveable depending on the load (cooler, dog, etc.). I'd kind of like to add a foot rest(s), but really don't want to glue/bolt in anything permanent at least to start with...

    Hernia Trippin'

My doc said the biggest factor was a predisposition. Anything you do that was a factor was a lesser factor in comparison according to him.

    Hernia Trippin'

Once repaired mine were no worries. I have had both sides and an umbilical one The umbilical one was strangulated and was an emergency surgery. That might have been really bad it it had happened in the back country with treatment unavailable. In all cases recovery was complete and fairly fast.

    Canoes and guns...

What an animal eats does affect the taste. Where I grew up and lived the deer tasted remarkably different depending on which side of the state they came from. A deer that was fed up on corn, hay crops, and soy beans tastes a lot different than one who lived on acorns and other forest foraging...

    Goin' Treeless

After disrespecting west TX scenery, I will say that I really enjoyed the food and the people when I rode my bicycle across TX. The people I met seemed to be an endless stream of interesting misfits who migrated there because they didn't fit in somewhere else. It is a good thing I enjoyed the...
