    Adjustable sliding solo seat

I ordered a set of plug cutters, they'll cut a tapered plug out of a piece of scrap that will leave the face grain showing. If I cut it out of a piece of scrap with a similar grain pattern shouldn't be that noticeable. I've wanted to get a set of those cutters anyway and I'm sure it won't be the...

    Adjustable sliding solo seat

Back to seat placement. I set the center of the slider frame 5" aft of center on the boat, thinking that would give me an equal amount of travel forward and backward from the 5" aft point. After setting the seat on the frame I realized that the seat width itself takes up all the rearward...

    Adjustable sliding solo seat

I'm thinking, like you, that the weak point is at the insert on the bottom of the truss. It's only about 1 3/4 " wide at that point and the grain runs horizontal. I will probably put a 1/4" wooden dowel on each side of the insert up through the bottom of the truss about an inch higher than the...

    Adjustable sliding solo seat

On the tumblehome, there is quite a bit. At the hull It's 24", 26" outside of the gunnels. It's a modified Northwest passage solo so I think the hull width is 29". My plan is to cut the seat frame as long as possible and then add on to the ends with something like dense foam or rubber to come in...

    Adjustable sliding solo seat

One of the two cross dowels holds the truss to the gunnel and the other, the rail to the truss. Two short bolts instead of one long bolt. Time will tell on the strength.

No Title Here are some pics of my slider. Not finished, just wanted to post some pics so you could get a visual of what I've been been talking about. Sometimes I don't explain myself as well as I should.

    Carbon Fiber Nokomis

Jim, what are the dimensions on your Nokomis. 38# sounds like you came out with a light boat and like the way your laminated thwart turned out also.

    Adjustable sliding solo seat

Alan, What is your normal position in relation to center? I'm curious where you locate your seats because you have probably built more boats than anyone here. Cruiser, those are some good looking foot braces and looks like you did an excellent installation job. How did you settle on the right...

    Adjustable sliding solo seat

Thanks guys, I'll try to set the center of the slider at 5". YC, the analogy of every action having an opposite reaction is the best reason I've heard to have a foot brace. I'll have to do some research on foot braces to see what I can come up with.

    Adjustable sliding solo seat

Sorry for the slow respond time, Just got my power back on. Nice looking set up Cruiser, good looking boat too. How far aft of center do you builders mount your seats. Jim roughly 5" and SG 3".

    Adjustable sliding solo seat

I decided to go with a truss on each side hung from the gunnels to hang my sliding seat. The gunnels ended up fairly straight after I put the thwarts in. The canoe without the thwarts wanted to curl up causing the gunnels to roll quite a bit. My first estimate of 18" long, I think will leave the...

    Hanging seats

Thanks for the offer Boatman. Finding them made of brass isn't easy either.

    Hanging seats

I'll have to do a google for brass. I was so set on SS, I didn't think of brass.

    Hanging seats

Nice looking hanger brackets. Long drops are tough to get a straight hole through. The last ones I did were 4" long on a Magic where the truss brackets were only 1/2" thick. Has anyone tried cross dowel nuts before? I'm looking at using them on my solo's sliding seat to get away from long holes...

    NWC Cruiser build

I agree your going to see a little bit of the fiberglass show through but not enough to worry about. I think you'll be amazed that the extra strip on the stems will sand out smooth and be almost unnoticable except for a little more of the weave ghosting.

My first cedar strip canoe build -- 17' Kooteny (was Micmac)

No Title Nice job on your boat. My strips on the stems end up frayed and terrible looking but they do sand out smooth and hardly noticeable when done. Some good info on glass work in the cruiser build thread. I go the cheap route on cedar and use rough sawn. I end up scarfing just about all the...

    Composite Canoe Build

Lighter boats seems to be everyones goal. I have been keeping it in mind on my current build as well thinking towards a better way next time. My 16 foot solo's hull glassed without any trim came in at 30 Lbs which was about where I wanted to be. I weighed the ash gunnels, molded but not trimmed...

    Ford F-150 still most popular

Another thing that keeps ford headed in the right direction is the use of the Eco boost engine. Providing better power along with increased mileage in a lightweight package. I'm sure the re introduced Ranger will have an Eco boost option to squeeze out some more miles per gallon.
