11 days, 2 moose, big water, great weather....

Could that be a moose run in the last pic? I think I use the same coffee cup as the one in the pic. Double walled stainless with folding handles.

    Limited materials, need advice

Hello Frank, I think you've made a good choice of wood to build with. A quick search mentioned Spanish cedar for boat building in a couple different articles but also mentioned a couple problems to watch out for. One article mentioned that the dust could be an Irritant if breathed so be sure to...

    Dugout Canoe found

Interesting find, My SIL lives not too far from there. She's taken us to an area they call Indian mounds where the native people threw their shells into piles after eating.

Traditional shop is coming into shape...

SE Michigan, Just a little way down the road, LOL. I've read where Sitka Spruce is a good wood for canoe building and hobby airplane construction. Is it hard to find clear boards in your area.

Traditional shop is coming into shape...

Love the look of timber framing, whether it's in a shop, home or cabin. Says craftsmanship, strong and built to last at the same time. By the way where can I put my order in for some Sitka Spruce.

    Maiden voyage

Have a great time on your trip and don't worry too much about the scrapes. They look a lot better after a quick sanding and another coat of Polyurethane. I like the easy to fix ability of a stripper as opposed to a gel coated boat. I found a Magic in great condition but ended up selling it...

US Govt expands Mexican travel warning...

On the other hand I'm glad to read this post. I just forwarded the State department advisory to someone I know that is planning to travel in Mexico. Myself, I would not go to Mexico for any reason.

    Repurposed PFD into portage pads

Nice job on the portage pads and great re-use of discarded materials. I had a similar Idea about re using the flotation pad in a pool float for picnic table seat pads but it was gone when I returned.

    Varnish stripper suggestion

I think I would just sand it down well enough to re coat, unless you've got major issues with the varnish that's on it now.

    Cowboy Coffee thoughts

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WUj59uaRODI Don't forget the spoon for your pasta. A reliable source tells me for better cowboy coffee, add the grounds after the water stops boiling.

First day out with new boat and new canoe dog

How did you fasten the webbing to the frames? I recently bought a webbed seat from Ed's that has a single smallish staple at each end holding the web to the frame. I'm surprised that a narrow fastener would hold a 2" wide strip.

    Best bow tie-down rope?

I like these rope ratchets with 1/4" solid braid rope. Quick and easy to tighten, I use two at the front and rear. https://www.amazon.com/Carolina-North-Ratchet-Polypropylene-Capacity/dp/B006P3B4A6/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1498597961&sr=8-4&keywords=rope+ratchet

    Seat height?

Seat height and placement has been probably the most undefined subject for canoe building I have found. A lot of personal preference as you can see from the reply's so far. My experience with a higher seat mount is the same as Jim's, the center of gravity is so high that the slightest move and...

    Solo 14

I see the tumblehome now. It also looks like you raised the tip of the bow sharply, I'm thinking for white water use? What works best for you, under or over with the 1/2 layer.

    Sponge ??

I did a quick search and found that the Micro fiber is pretty reasonable https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-Thick-Microfiber-Cleaning-Cloths/dp/B00EVY2SKG/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1494594146&sr=8-6&keywords=microfiber+cloth I've got my eye on my wife's sponge she uses for wall paper and I have...

    Sponge ??

If you know someone handy with a sewing machine I'm sure they could sew up a cover out of a micro fiber cloth with a nice strap for the Home Depot sponge and have the best of both worlds.

    Foam core material questions?

http://www.fiberglasssupply.com/Product_Catalog/Core_Materials/core_materials.html I'm a newbie to foam core and composites myself but have been looking at this supplier for Divinycell foam core. They seem to be reasonably priced, but I have not ordered from them yet to see how the shipping...
