    Freedom 17 Strip build

Thanks, i did take it out for an hour or so last weekend. I went out with my wife and threw two of my kids in as ballast. Wife was scared to death as it's a little twitchy especially with my daughter who has a hard time keeping still. For me it felt a little twitchy also but I think it was...

    Freedom 17 Strip build

Officially done!! Now i just need to get it in the water. WT. 40# on the nose as setup in the pictures. A few observations for the next person building one, the gunwales are a little light, the boat is more flexible than i would like. I used redwood about 1 1/8" across the top and about 7/8"...

    Freedom 17 Strip build

I wish I could say I had a spraying system... I bought a five gallon pail of this stuff for a different project... It held up well in the application I had so I thought I'd give it a try. It cures pretty hard so you can buff it out/wet sand if you want. The actually application couldn't be...

    Freedom 17 Strip build

Thanks. It definitely looks best from about 10ft away!! The flatsawn was an accident. I though I was getting it resawn flat so when I cut the strips it would be quarter sawn but i guess I didn't figure so good. Oh well it all works out, it must be hard to make a stripper look ugly. The spray...

    Freedom 17 Strip build

Just finished sanding the outside of the hull. I sprayed on some EMTEC 9300 with a HVLP spray gun on the outside of the hull instead of using varnish. It's way easier and faster than varnish I just hope it works OK. The inside work is pretty much done I just need to do a quick sanding and...

    Cedar Strip Build "The Experiment"

Sorry forgot to say the stripping pattern look great...that's a lot of work!!

    Cedar Strip Build "The Experiment"

I'd recommend getting rid of the blue tape. Look for the green 3m high adhesion tape (not frog tape) It work great and has some stretch so it pulls the joints tight.

Durability test of a cedar strip canoe

Is this the one you just finished? I think I'd cry, glad it worked out reasonably OK. I think my lighter constructed boat might have ended up as match sticks.

    NJ Pine Barrens

Has anybody on this site travelled through the pine barrens and can recommend a good day trip? I'm in Ocean City for the week and looking for a good trip or two that my brother and I can take. I guess it could be anywhere around Ocean City. Thanks in advance!

    Freedom 17 Strip build

I just put a coat of epoxy on the gunnels/gunwales nice and shiny (other than the dust in the epoxy).

    Preferred gunwale material?

I'm building a boat now with redwood gunnels, should I epoxy it? Or maybe varnish or Tung oil? Maybe glass it and then varnish like everything else?

    Freedom 17 Strip build

Thanks everyone, I'm starting to feel like I'm close now!! I had all sorts of big plans for the seats but now I think I'm going to mount them in cleats and use webbing for the seat material. I've never made a yoke before does anyone have a outline pattern I can use? btw the boat is right at...

    Freedom 17 Strip build

Yeah a barrier would have helped. I tried to use tape but the glue surfaces were all wet with epoxy. I wet out a small section to see what it will look like, i like it.

    Freedom 17 Strip build

i added the gunwales in and out. I thought it would be cool to leave the gap caused by the hull. My plan was to fill it with epoxy after the gunales were installed that way I'd get a nice pinstripe. It was a pain in the neck. Although epoxy is thick it just continues to ooze forever!!! When...

    Cedar Strip Build "The Experiment"

Just read my post, i should have said "if I were to use a router I'd make a fully captured template..." My real recommendation is to cut it by hand.

    Cedar Strip Build "The Experiment"

I use tape on my builds as well, it works well but you have to get the green 3m tape. It extra sticky and has some stretch so it keeps squeezing the joint while its drying. I use hot glue to hold and plywood to hold everything to the forms. Good luck routing the 1/4" groove. I probably would...

    Solo expedition build

The lacing is a great idea, functional easy and light. I'd consider using bungee instead of rope marine grade 5/16 is very strong and long lasting. You can also get it with reflective tracing so it could be a safety feature as well. When kayak guys put holes in the hull they typically drill a...

No Title A little update. I installed the buoyancy tanks for the bow and stern. Next I'll do the outer gunwales.

    Freedom 17 Strip build

Ouch that hurts!! In the example I showed I didn't really have any epoxy in direct contact with the glass, the poly sheet covered the mold and the nearby glass. On a subsequent setup I used plexiglass as the backer in (direct contact with the soaked breather). I didn't put any release agent on...
