I'd recommend getting rid of the blue tape. Look for the green 3m high adhesion tape (not frog tape) It work great and has some stretch so it pulls the joints tight.

I just put a coat of epoxy on the gunnels/gunwales nice and shiny (other than the dust in the epoxy).

I'm building a boat now with redwood gunnels, should I epoxy it? Or maybe varnish or Tung oil? Maybe glass it and then varnish like everything else?

Yeah a barrier would have helped. I tried to use tape but the glue surfaces were all wet with epoxy. I wet out a small section to see what it will look like, i like it.
