Last night I let my impatience get the best of me, after about four hours I pulled the glue up off the form. Almost immediately it started to delaminate. I quickly put it back in the form, hoping for the best. This AM I took a look, it started out ok but when I loaded it up it delaminated in...

No Title I made a jig to bend the front of the seat. Just eyeballed the curve, about an inch and a quarter drop about 16" wide. I ripped the cypress to about 3/16" thick. Crosssection is about 1 1/8" x 1 1/4" deep. Used titebond for the glue. I may redo with epoxy depending how this looks...

I think I want everything attached permanently. The seatback would be a hinged "H" shape that when folded forward would expose shoulder pads. Or I could just try a tump line setup.

Ok I'm back. Just finished building a piesafe donation for my daughter's school. So now I can get back to important stuff! I need help with the seat in this canoe, I think it will be Cypress with a curved front. According to the designer I should place ithe front of the seat an inch or two...

    NWC Cruiser build

Wow, looks great. I prefer to use a seal coat, I squeege it on when I do it. That way there is no extra epoxy, when I'm done the wood has a flat finish and there isn't enough build to hold a bubble. Not a big deal, there is just a little more epoxy on the surface. Now, take a razor blade and...

Robin I found you a boat,,,

Robin good looking boat, seems like a good deal. I'd give it a shot but I have too may things getting built in the basement and my wife might shoot me if I brought one more home. https://westernmass.craigslist.org/boa/5948453763.html

Alan, I think what you're seeing is the patina on the upper surface of the gunwales (dried up pickle juice?) I kind like it looks neat and seems pretty durable, unfortunately I didn't align the seam perfectly so I'm going to have to take it down to bare wood. I'm not sure if I like the bright...

No Title Just got gunwales epoxied on. Checked the weight 32# seems a little off I think it was my technique I'm using a pulley for the lift. I'm guessing it's really about 34#. Anyways here is a picture. The cypress really smells when cutting. It was reclaimed from pickle barrels supposedly.

No Title Cypress is about 50% heavier and 50%more dent resistant than wrc as well as naturally rot resistant This hull seems really stiff compared to the last canoe so I'm going light on the gunwales. I was thinking about going more traditional scuppered style with seat hanging. Seems like...

No Title Haven't posted in a while but I've made progress. Finished the float tanks no vent yet (still debating internally). I get 1.5psi swings with a 50degree swing. Seems like you could easily see that going from hot sun to cool water. There is a fair amount of surface on the hull side...

A better way is to let the two glued surfaces dry the cover with a layer of paper. Position the kneeling pad where you want and the slide the paper out while holding the pad in place.

    Epoxy/Glass issue

It might be your top coat, on my last canoe I used some waterbased clear coat which looked beautiful until I put it in the water. Then it turned milky everywhere that got wet. It doesn't really go away when rewet, only a little better. I'm living with it, one of these days I'll fix it up.

I started fitting some float tanks for the ends, should I drills vent holes to equalize the pressure in the tank?

I just weighed it, I'm at 27# not too bad. What SG said about the hull shape effecting stiffness is so true. I bet I could paddle this now without gunwales!

Well...I squeegied a second coat of epoxy at the cost of about 10oz. of boat weight. I'm not sure if it's worth it because I'm not planning on making the interior a showpiece. My thoughts for doing this are: it's an easy way to level out the seams (partially) without sanding, add some wear...

The tape line worked well, minimal fraying of the cloth. After I cut it I had to go around the edge with a brush to do a little touch up which went well. I think I put the second football layer on top mostly out of habit. When I do it in the outside of the hill I can scrape the edge to make a...

No Title Second layer all wet out, went well some small bubbles that I couldn't get out though. Going to wait an hour or two and roll on another coat to fill the weave.

No Title A second layer of 6oz is about to go on. I'm doing it a little differently this time, I marked the perimeter with two layers of tape. I plan on cutting to the tape with a razor after I wet out, hopefully that will keep everything meet and minimize stray fiberglass strands.
