No Title Oops I forgot to show a picture of the seat. Here it is. Current weight is 32# even. It's killing me to not get it on the water. Soon I hope.

Sorry about the random picture orientations. This is definitely my worst glassine job. Lots of tiny bubbles. I think the glass was the culprit.

All shiny. Almost time to hit the water. I need to wait a week or so before I can get varnish on it. Ugh.

What's happening in your shop this winter?

Nope, kids did all of the Tin work. It was a classroom project, the school logo is in the center and each of the corners has one of the students initials.

What's happening in your shop this winter?

No Title Just thought I'd post a couple of pictures from my winter work. Finally finished the paddle with extra epoxy from my seat build. Piesafe was a donation to my daughters school fundraiser.

Looks really nice. Nice bandsaw too!

Here is the bracket cut to shape and sanded. I used my old bandsaw with the crappy blade. Cut like butter, tried the angle grinder NG smelly and slow. Made a tape mask to keep it clean so I could add some fillets. Roughed up the old epoxy glue surface In place, I added more black to...

Yeah the black chalk works pretty well and it's cheap (like me)! After I cut it to shape I plan on feathering the side that is glued to the hull, then I'll seal it with another coat of epoxy. That should soften any sharp edges. Overall I like the process, I have about an hour into this side...

Well here's where my experiment is so far. Seems pretty good I just need to trim to shape and epoxy in place. I used Black Chalkline to make the epoxy black. There are about 12-14 layers of 8oz fiberglass, maybe 3/16+" thick. Seems very strong. Wet it out on Saran Wrap on the bench, after...

I remember the post, I'm not worried about the strength of the wood. Just debating trying something different. And I get to use sandbags for my layup never did that!! Do you think the fiberglass will crack over time? I was thinking to not use any gussets, if the wood from the seat goes all...

Yup basically just cleats made from glass instead of wood. Not much advantage if any, maybe a little smaller than a wood cleat. Also, I like the idea of using the canoe as a mold so everything fits perfectly (and it's something different). I was originally going to hang the seat but I...

    Northwest Passage Solo

Ok I had a new thought. What if I fixture the seat in place and use the boat and the seat as a mold for a fiberglass angle bracket. Basically fixture the seat, turn the boat on its side lay some Saran Wrap down and them 10 layers of 8oz cloth. Next day clean it up and do the other side...

    Epoxy on canvas experiment

I don't know anything about canvas filler but two possibilities are Corey's Goop from the skin boat school. He makes a flexible epoxy for skin on frame kayaks. Another option is to add excess solvent to standard epoxy. When it hardens it ends up rubbery. I think around 10% or so will work.

Hey Jim where do you get your hanger bolts? I was thinking of using all thread, I need about 6" long.

No Title Sorry about the upside down picture. I pretty much have the seat fitted, 4" from the center of the canoe, 7" to the top of the seat. Funny thing when I first tried to fit the seat I couldn't get it in I had to spead the gunwales about 2 1/2" because of thumblehome. No cracks so...

No Title I need some guidance. I'm fitting up my seat, I was planning on using cleats but as you can see from the picture I'm really close to the gunwales. Maybe I should hang it?? In the picture I have about7.5 inches between the seat and the hull. If I trimmed it a little I could get 8.5"...

No Title Float chamber for SG. In my rush I forgot to drill and install a wood block for the painter. I also wanted to add some Maroske fittings for bungees. Also a couple of pictures of my epoxy glueup no cracks and looks great.

Yeah. I'm a little worried about starving the epoxy joints I clamped it pretty tight. I ran out epoxy after I wet it up. I got lazy and didn't mix up another batch. I got pictureswhat do you want to see??
