    Food barrels and buckets

Are the 30L - 60L food barrels bear proof? How about a 5 gallon bucket with a gamma seal lid, are they bear proof?

    Wood Paddles

I want to get a new wood paddle. Is there a quality difference between Bending Branches and Wenonah? The local dealer carries Wenonah and REI (150 miles to the north) carries Bending Branches.

    Breathable waist high waders

I use Chota Hppies with rubber soled wading boots. Felt soled boots are not legal in Alaska. I never cared for the felt soled boots anyway. They were too slippery for me.

    Beginner again

I guess I forgot to follow up on this thread, my apologies. I took the advise from above and put the canoe in the water parallel to the shore and was able to get into the canoe without tipping over. When I was done canoeing, I brought the canoe parallel to the shore and was able to get out...

    Commercially available freeze dried foods

I have never used a barrel. I wouldn’t even know where to buy one. Even if I knew where to buy one, the shipping to Alaska would probably be too expensive. I just pack my food in a portage pack.

New Water Filters Claiming to Remove Viruses in Addition to Bacteria/Cysts

Viruses are some of the smallest microscopic organisms out there. If there is a filter that will stop a virus, I would imagine that it would take forever to filter a quart of water.

    Commercially available freeze dried foods

I never buy or eat freeze dried food. It is too expensive and I don’t care for the taste. I also have a heart problem and have to watch the sodium and fat content. I dehydrate my own food. For bears, I just keep the food bag away from camp. A brown bear can reach up to 14 feet into a tree...

    Water proofing gloves.

For tents, maps, etc., I use Thompsons Water Seal. Very inexpensive. A gallon will last a life time. I apply with a foam brush.

    Water proofing gloves.

I have used sno-seal for 50 years and have never had any leather degrade. I have a pair of LLBean Maine hunting boots that are over 40 years old that I keep the leather waterproofed with Sno-seal and the leather looks brand new. Must be armchair experts.

    Where else can we go?

Erica, you could do the Yukon River from Eagle, AK to either Circle, AK or the Dalton Highway. Wild, remote, and still car accessible at the put in and take out points.

    Where else can we go?

The reason I recommend the kindle version is so that you don’t have to wait for a book from Amazon. The last order I made with Amazon took a month for them to ship out the order and that was using Amazon Prime. The post office delivered my order in 3 days.

    Where else can we go?

Anybody considering canoeing in Alaska, I would recommend you download the Kindle book, The Alaska River Guide. It lists a lot of different choices for canoeing in Alaska. Some are even reachable by road.

    Where else can we go?

The 14 day quarantine for people flying into Alaska ends on June 2, 2020. So if you fly up to Alaska on June 3 or later, you could rent canoes and go on our rivers and lakes. We have over 3000 rivers and over 3,000,000 lakes.
