Big trees are damaged less and on smaller thinner barked tree protection can be put between the rope and the tree.

    Fit to be tied

DayTripper I have seen 1/8 line leave a compressed ring around a tree in one night but not usually. It was a tarp ridge line. If the hammock was hung from it it would have done more damage. Big trees (greater than 12 EDIT Sorry most pf this post disappeared

    Fit to be tied

DayTripper Cruiser is correct Zing-it or Lashit is strong enough. I use to have my ridge line made out of Zing-it. I changed to 1/8 amsteel because it hurt my hand to pull that small string tight as I like my ridge line. https://dutchwaregear.com/product/1-8-amsteel-blue/ The amsteal is about...

    Herding Carp

I sometimes paddle in back waters that is 6 to 10 inches deep. The carp will move away from you till they get trapped between you and the bank. Then in mass they turn and run at you trying to go under the canoe. When it is too shallow they will lift the canoe and push it sideways. I call it...

    Greetings from the swamp

I have found that a solo is more of a correct fit for the paddler than just what is a good solo canoe. I have owned and tripped in 3 different real nice solo canoes. I have found that the smaller the canoe the better till it is too small. If the canoe is large enough to carry me and my load...

Last gear purchase(s) that made a real difference?

Dry bags. I use several for different things. My camera is not water proof but I carry it is a 1 liter dry bag in my shirt pocket. Several times it has gone in the water in the bag and always come out dry. A pocket sized camera with a zoom of X30. This gives a 35mm equivalent of 24 to...

    Novacraft bootlace seats

303 makes cane seats SLICK! I do not know if it will make a lace type of seat dangerously slick.

11 days, 2 moose, big water, great weather....

Loved the report and all the pictures. I would go on a trip like that even as just a portage monkey.

How far have you paddled in one day???

You guys make me feel like a real wimp. This summer on the first trip first day we did 19 miles of downriver with a just noticeable current and only 1 portage. On my Solo I average 14 miles per day for 6&1/2 days which included over 18 miles of portages.

Simulated Deep Water Self-Rescue Result: FAIL

Several years ago I tried and failed to get back in my Magic. I was able to spin the canoe and get the water out. I do frequently cross large lakes. There is almost always a fishing pole with 100yds of 20 Lb. line lashed in the boat. My plan is to not waste energy trying to get back in. Empty...

    2016 Northstar Polaris

I emailed Northstar and got a reply that wood trim adds 3 pounds to a Polaris. I believe that would take the total weight from 38 Lbs. to 41 Lbs.

    Butt end brightwork anti-fungal treatment?

Muskrat Thanks for the link on thinning epoxy. I have thinned epoxy with acetone for years and been told by the sails rep that that was not a good idea but they could not give any particulars as to why not. I found that the acetone slows the setting and improved the wetting. I described it...

    Too much gear?

I can only carry about 50 Lb comfortably and safely so that sets my limit. My gear pack will be 50 lb and I will have a food pack which I carry with the canoe.

    Electrical Power in the Field

As far as having the correct connector on a new type of battery to fit any older equipment it is not likely. There are some options for connecting up batteries. Go to ebay and search for “18650 battery holder” and you will see a bunch. People put those in a small plastic case hole...

    Electrical Power in the Field

Chip Willies batteries are NiMH AA’s which have a capacity of about 1800mAH. I assume the D cell you are talking about are Alkaline. I have measured Energizer D cells and found they put out 14000mAH between 1.6 volts and 1 volt. That would give you 7.7 times as much current but it will...

    Electrical Power in the Field

Just reading through this thread and see the discussion addressing 2 situations. I would call them car camping and wilderness camping. For wilderness camping if you are using batteries to recharge batteries there will be a loss in the process so only use this where the battery being recharged...
