    Another New To Me Canoe

No Title Come hell or high water I was going out yesterday, temps near 60 degrees for Dec in NH is rare and I have be wanting to try this hull out. I will admit I was nervous about it being a hull that would toss me in the minute I turned to look over my shoulder but that wasn't the case at...

Come on Baby Light My Fire!

No Title I bring along a couple of bic lighters as well. I do have the egg carton/sawdust/wax fire starter as well. Lately though for those wet and cold times I bring along a couple of road flares. Get just about anything going quickly and they are light and take up very little room. A...

    Story about disappeared wayward soul/canoeist

An interesting read for certain. I know there was another guy that AndyS ran into in NJ doing the same kind of journey, his name escapes me now as it was a couple of years ago.

    Another New To Me Canoe

Well, I won't be doing any of the stem work until warmer weather = unheated workshop. They are good enough for now but I do like the info on wet sanding, only have done a little in the past. Going to try to see first if the gunwales are glued/resined together and if so will just sand them down...

    Another New To Me Canoe

Actually Dynel skid plates is my go to for damage this bad although the resin, applied in a haphazardly fashion, does protect those areas. I just don't like the looks of it. As Mike said, Dynel applied using Peel Ply makes for a tight bond and does compress it enough to keep a clean transition...

    Another New To Me Canoe

Had the fortune of picking up a Bell Rob Roy this weekend. It's a 1997 and of course needs a little work here and there. I can paddle it as is right now and once my back is up to it, threw it out again last night, I'll be taking it out for a test spin. For its age it is pretty darn good...

    Canoe in the Snow

No Title From a few years back. A day jaunt on the Blackwater River, NH. Had other pictures but lost them when the house burned down in 2013. This one of my favorites.

    The Carbon Fiber Project

I'm still trying to get this thing done so did some more work on it. Here's from my write up. Look for November 20th entry for today's work. http://scooter-bangortoportland.blogspot.com/2015/11/the-carbon-fiber-project.html What I have noticed is the sagging of the cardboard, not to...

    The Carbon Fiber Project

Alan, I will be coating the outside of the box as well. I do plan on using CF on the exterior and adding another layer of it over the Dynel on the inside. I'm guessing this will make it pretty sturdy. I just put the last layer on the inside this evening. Little by little! After I'm done...

    The Carbon Fiber Project

This is strictly for my pots, pans, coffee pot, etc. No food is going in this so I'm leaving it black. It won't be 100% water tight but that's ok. I did think about using foam but after the acetone test opted for the box. So far it is rigid enough and am thinking once I have the outside...

    The Carbon Fiber Project

Jim, the thought of the type of foam I used came into question. According to the article I read in Expoy Works the foam was melted out with acetone. I am guessing one type of foam is better for this application vs what I used. It's all a crap shoot, usually the way my projects work! ;-)...

    The Carbon Fiber Project

I truly hesitate to post this here as there are so many great craftsmen but thought I could provide a few chuckles for you all at my lack of skills. It was really a project I wanted to do after it got buried into my brain and went ahead with it despite many thoughts against doing it. Sometimes...

What's happening in your shop this winter?

Going back to McCreas post. Bags of stuff that continue to haunt my abode is a problem! I know that I will need whatever I save sometime but after about 5 years I have to throw in the towel and say it's time to toss it. What is exempt is little pieces of rope. McCrea has kindly hidden bags...

    Annual Gentlemen's Trip

Since 2002 a group of us have been going to one of the lakes up north, usually Lake Umbagog. For the last few years we've been staying on the Rapid River at Cedar Stump campsite. Not bad considering it's cheaper then going on Umbagog and we don't have to move every couple of days or get...

    Repair of Royalex canoe

Actually can't find pics of that design but clearly recall the better half calling it a butt shaped thing while you compared it to other parts of a man's body. Clearly it was time to repaint!

    Repair of Royalex canoe

No Title Here's pictures of how I painted the bow and stern of the Optima. Pretty simple once I discovered I could see my pencil line through the masking tape. I was worried it would bleed through the tape but it didn't. Another trick to remember! Two pics aren't show but if you click on 5...

DIY side-mount for motor on double-ender canoe?

I think Micheal up front will suffice for a test run. Now we have to figure out an outrigger for this rig Joel.

    Old Town gunwales

Goosebay Lumber in NH carries planks of ash, almost always 20 footers by 8 to 10 inches by over an inch thick. I buy a couple a year and mill out my own. With the Ash Borer eating up our ash trees I'm thinking I might need to stock pile a bunch for future use. I can buy them from Millbrook...
