    Some thing "new"...

No Title Doing the Rock A Copter over the thwart on the Blackwater River, NH. Not to hard to do and to date I haven't fallen in.

    I hate gelcoat....

I'm looking at using Interlux paint which can be bought as an epoxy paint, some a two part, I believe from what I've read. I know a couple of folks who have used it with success. It is a bit pricey but if I can avoid using gel coat I will go this route. I think gel coat is gel coat, not epoxy...

    Adjustable Mini-cell Foam Seat idea

Well, I've slept a few times in a canoe, twice in one night in my Disco caught in an eddy. Rest of the crew had to come back to find me, did I say twice? Guess I was tired! Another time on the James Bay tucked with my feet in the bow and my head under the seat. Not very comfortable, we were...

    Restored Bell Northstar

Hey Robin, I'm thinking about using that in White for my Bell Rob Roy. How much did you use to cover that boat? It does look fantastic!

Rebuild of a Kevlar Sailing Explorer

Well now, that was the boat falling out of the cradles, not ME falling out of the chair! That was Ginger Ale I was cracking open on every occasion, the old stand by of Liquid Courage is reserved for... OK, next Bias? Me? Really? And YES, I will order release Peel Ply...probably about the...

Time to make some webbing loops

You don't need to send me anything as I have a complete roll of hot pink and some other ungodly color webbing to use up! Please send it Rippy!

Rebuild of a Kevlar Sailing Explorer

Well, we got back at the skid plates today and got it all done. It's always good to spend a day and project with a fellow shop rat! It's always good to have a fresh set of eyes to look things over as well. http://scooter-bangortoportland.blog...ver-rehab.html Hal reported in that the peel ply...

I think I'll just put this here (gruesome)

A few years ago in haste while cutting a small block of wood with the chop saw that piece of wood kicked and sliced the tip of my index finger wide open! As I walked up to the house dripping blood everywhere the better half sees me and with absolutely no hesitation breaks out the first aid...

    Composite Bloodvein build

The Peel Ply does help with smoothing down the Dynel some but from my experience it is a bit of a bear to sand. On my Courier rebuild I had never even heard of PP and those skid plates are a bit grizzly. On the Lettman that Mr. McCrea helped with we used PP and it is a huge difference.

Rebuild of a Kevlar Sailing Explorer

Robin, We didn't have enough to redo both seats which is a bummer but typical. I always flip my seat over when I reweb them and like you hit the bottom with a sander. For cutting the web I use a propane torch and putty knife. Just heat up the knife and melt/burn webbing to desired length...

Rebuild of a Kevlar Sailing Explorer

So Ol' Hal the Gullboy finds a treasure, an 83' Kevlar Explorer set up for sailing, with the sail, the mast step, the rudder and leeboards for short cash and some beer. If I stated the price you'd be jealous, like me, and mad as hell that Hal got it! Now here's the messed up kind of thing...

    Nokomis Build

Alan, I use West System for all of my projects. Of course I'm not building beautiful boats but tinkering with broken old hulls. I use 206/105 for the resin and for tough spots I add in some G-Flex. Just food for thought!

Aluminum Rails for a Rob Roy

I certainly entertained the idea of an Alan Gage carbon fiber gunwale as they are a thing of beauty. In the end I looked around my shop at my feeble attempts at that sort of thing and kicked myself in the arse enough times to go with the easy route for now. Please think of my Tale of Working...

Aluminum Rails for a Rob Roy

Well, SG you were correct! The compound angles defeated us! My buddy who does a lot of metal work came over and we worked on it for a long while but the bottom line is that the gunwale at one and a quarter inches at the top just couldn't bend enough for the upward sweep of the cowling without...

    What are you reading?

I lost most of my books in a house fire two years ago this Mon but what I could salvage were two books that I read in my youth that pretty much cemented my interest in being outdoors. My guess is a lot you also read these. I'm actually re-reading them now as I never tire of them...perhaps an...

Aluminum Rails for a Rob Roy

Update on the Aluminum gunwales. Last weekend I started to try to get these on solo. Since I had an 18' piece I sacrificed a six inch piece to see how it would all fit and I wanted to mark where the bottom of the gunwale would sit and I marked it with tape. Pencil marks just wouldn't hack it...

Aluminum Rails for a Rob Roy

After I put the gunwales up I was ok with the extension of the ladder so just left it that way. If the gunwales started swaying I would have pulled over and taken care of it but they rode just fine. I'm sure I'm going to piss someone off about MA drivers but just calling a spade a spade!
