question ? how to measure a canoe?

Thanks for the offer Iskweo, I am somewhat of a luddite when it comes to photos & posting them but I will get them together. This canoe has no serial # but some odd features. It has never been used except by myself, the former owner won it in a raffle in northern Canada (so the story goes ) back...

    New National Monument in Maine

Anytime a wealthy individual wants to gift wild land in perpetuity as a wanderland for the rest of us is ok by me. What would we do if it wasn't for Percival Baxter or the folks that created the adirondack preserve. All those who labored to create park systems for us to enjoy , I feel lifelong...

Has anyone checked a known model against a mfgs. spec table. I wonder what kind of tolerance was acceptable. I'm sure there was a variance in weight.

question ? how to measure a canoe?

I have an unidentified w/c canoe. In describing it to someone where are measurments taken from overall ? The bow & stern ends of the gunnels or the furthermost distance at the stembands ? Is the width at the inwales or outwales or tumblehome and the depth to the ribs or planking ?

    lobster lake to chesuncook

Thanks for all the tips guys, I plan on bringing a +- 20' w/c canoe as on a previous trip crossing eagle lake we were hit by a storm. While nothing compared to the ocean it got pretty nip & tuk as to forward momentum. Mike that tarp suggestion is a definite, but it didn't help on that occasion...

Many short trips vs. a single long trip

I'm in the same boat as many of you retired guys. Lucklily I live in a sparsely populated area of Pennsylvania between two rivers with many ponds ,forests and gamelands nearby. While much of my years time is devoted gardening, fishing ,hunting, firewood and horses ( I rarely ride anymore, I...

    Pretty Cool 700plus members

The great thing about this forum are the members, many of which while I've never met them I feel they are kindred spirits. While no one can make all the excursions listed you feel as though you can sit by the campfire and listen to the conversation. Thanks Robin !

Stuff you take now that 15 years ago you didn't

More & more I come to rely on tried & true items. My flotation cushion serves its original purpose but protects my knee caps as I like to kneel in canoes rather than sit, in camp it acts as my chair & as my pillow while sleeping., I also find the campmor versatarp to be able to perform a...

Stuff you take and don't use

Yellowcanoe, I don't think any of this discussion is a rebuke of your methods , being 65 myself anything that can keep you out there is a indispensable item & to each his own, I've alway learned a lot from your comments & admired your adventurist spirit. Go Girl !

Stuff you take and don't use

A rule I try to follow, was stated in Steward Edward White's book " The Forest ". Make 3 piles after your trip, #1 Things you used everyday, #2 Things you used occasionally, #3 Things you never used. Stop bringing #3, consider not bringing #2, Bring pile #1. You'll save alot of time in packing...

Went to my first assembly on thur. 14th & loved it ,one day is not enough to speak to all the knowledgeable folk there. Was camped out in st.
