    Another Chestnut(?)

I'm on both forums, and find them useful. About lumberyard spruce, my dad made a paddle of it years ago, I still use it. I built a mast for a dory from it, served well. I think we should use the best material we can find and afford, in keeping with the quality of the boat.

Fears while paddling or on canoe trips

Most of my boat experience is in larger boats than canoes, sailboats 10-39'. Even a partial capsize, with water pouring over the gunwale, can be alarming. That's true with my canoes too. I'm more cautious than when I was young, and sometimes a little nervous. That's appropriate, I have less...

    New grips for wood paddles?

Interesting thread. I keep an eye out for decent paddles and oars at tag sales. I have two old wooden Folbot paddles that might be converted into singles. I think I would try to scarf an extension onto half of a double paddle to produce a useful length. If I had a broken paddle that would...

Short Encounters with Bear and Mountain Lion

I think at the end he did throw rocks, which ended the encounter. If you watch the last bit, the camera seems to angle and lower, you can hear the sound of gravel scraping. When the cat runs off, there is a visible gouge across the trail as if he grabbed a handful. At one point I think I heard...

Toronto Canoe History by Murat Vardar

I think also as the popularity of a pastime like canoeing increases, naturally sales rise. But there is a saturation point. Once a family owns a canoe, they won't need a new one for a long time.

Socrates: "Know thyself." Me: As a paddler.

I'm primarily an off season and travel paddler. Dad built a couple of kit canoes when I was very young, I have many memories of them. We did a lot of boating, it started a lifelong love affair with the water. After one year of college, I joined the USCG. The first time I went to sea, I didn't...

    Why Are You Here?

I found this forum through a link in another, WCHA maybe? I come back to enjoy reports, to learn methods, and share a common interest.

    Strap Yoke Variation

Interesting discussion. Living and paddling on a sandy saltwater island I don't do much portaging. The car to the water is rarely more than 100 yards. I roll the boat on a dolly whenever possible, I don't need any more back trouble. When I do carry, it's not over my head, but sideways on my...

On FB: Converting Saw Horse to Wall Canoe Rack

Pretty cool. But I use those sawhorses all the time, even for brewing. My canoes are held to the garage ceiling with web straps.

    No More Tripping Yet Here?

Well said. I've hurt myself several times in recent years, a couple of hospital visits and one surgery were required. I've become more cautious, but I'm not staying ashore.

Online wilderness first aid class? Experience and/or comments?

My first aid training was in the USCG, and in police departments. I haven't taken a course since. I think you can learn a lot in an online course, and it's way better than not taking any course. At sea on a sailboat my first aid kit assumes the probability of rescue within a few hours if...

    Boat as a Base Camp?

Thanks guys. All my boats get used in salt or brackish water, there really aren't many other options here. I think that climbing in would be harder than climbing out.

    Boat as a Base Camp?

Just daydreaming here. I haven't camped on dirt in decades, though I have "camp cruised" a couple of small sailboats. My last multi day canoe trip used a motel as a base. Now I own a 39' cruising ketch, and ponder the practicality of sailing up a river and paddling the creeks that feed into it...

Vehicle problems while driving, or parking, to and fro canoe trips

I've never owned a car that was newer than nine years old when I bought it. Until the last three cars, I haven't paid more than $1200 for any car. So I've done more than a few roadside repairs. The only time I remember when I had a boat on top was my '78 Cordoba had a wheel bearing fail...

Why are wood canvas canoes so nice to paddle

It might have change the center of gravity, depending on the density of the gear. But I find that very light boats benefit from loading.
