    Tie-downs for Transport

I made up a dozen or so of these to buffer between the round Yakima rack and the gunwales. The base is minicel, and the top is yellow 5 mm Evazote pad from MEC. Minicel is greasy-slippery when wet, so I used the super-grippy Evazote on the tops. I've carried some boats from Clipper in...

    Tie-downs for Transport

". . . I always fasten a short bungee strap from the rack bar to the front thwart as soon as I lift the canoe onto the vehicle, it is the last thing I unhook before unloading . . ." Turtle Ditto.

    Tie-downs for Transport

For local travel I use 1" cam straps front and back, and a 1" cam strap pigtail around the front thwart and front cross-bar. For highway trips, I double up on the front strap and I tie the front painter to a Thule under-the-hood strap.

    Measuring Epoxy

From System Three website: "All solvent-free epoxies have essentially unlimited shelf lives so long as they are stored in sealed containers. The resin may crystallize or the hardener may darken but this does not affect its performance. If the material is more than a year old do a test to...

    Making a paddle

I've been using either Lee Valley Cabinet Maker's Adhesive 2002 GF, or West System 105-206+filler (silica, wood flour, cotton flox etc) for laminating. Sometimes I mix in a pinch of West 423 Graphite Powder to either adhesive to give me a nice black glue line-- I like to know where the joint is...

    Making a paddle

Hi blackfly. Here's a great resource worth every penny: https://www.amazon.ca/Canoe-Paddles-Complete-Guide-Making/dp/1552095258/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1460650762&sr=8-1&keywords=Paddle+making+book

    Mem's making a paddle so do I....

Canotrouge, I quite like the look of the tapered glue line. You've been busy! I managed to whittle my Sitka Beavertail shaft down to roundish yesterday, and I will refine it some today and hopefully prep it for finish. I looked at some videos from Shaw & Tenney on YouTube and noted the...

That looks great CT. Here's an update on my Sitka Beavertail. I hope to finish the shaft tomorrow.

    Shaving Horse

The holes have chrome-moly tube sleeves epoxied in, and the through-pins are half-inch steel rods.

    Shaving Horse

Thanks all. Murat V, your horse is sensible and perfect for the job; it's very similar to those used by professional chair bodgers of centuries past. That round thing in the horse's mouth is a piece of reinforced clear PVC tube over a 1.25" hardwood dowel. It's attached through the 'nostrils'...

    Shaving Horse

Yes I really think these seats qualify as art-- so many tools are beautiful in form and function. I used the horse for a while with just the fir board, but it's really slippery and you need to have a firm base to draw from-- even with the push-back from the treadle down below. I kept sliding...

    Shaving Horse

Does anybody else use a shaving horse for shaping some aspects of a paddle? First I do the blade to the throat, and the grip to the 'max choke-up' position (about a foot from the end of the grip)-- I do these clamped to the bench and in a vise for quick flipping. I do the shaft last, beginning...

    Canoe plans

I agree with memaquay: if it's mostly river travel-- some big and fast-- I'll take the Ranger too. But for the solo aspect, paddling conditions would surely have to be more sedate-- this Prospector is a full-bodied craft. I prefer symmetrical canoes in moving water for the reasons you...

    Canoe plans

The Freedom 15 by Steve Killing is a good-looking plan worth checking out. It is finer than the Ranger 15 Prospector, with a 'modern' hull shape. I think it would fit the role as a part-time solo a little better than the Ranger. http://www.bearmountainboats.ca/coll...cts/freedom-15
