If by spray butter you mean I highly recommend upgrading to Trader Joe's ghee. Much better.

    BWCA Permits

I think the BWCA solution is to overbook like airlines. Calculate the canceled and no shows, and adjust the quotas proportionately. Keep all deposits 30 days prior. Only release permits canceled more than 30 days. Basically quota max at popular entries.

    St Regis advice

I haven't done the Frost River. Solitude and wilderness are relative. In the Daks it's hard to travel but a few days without seeing civilization - buildings, vehicles, etc. - and you'll probably see people or lots of people at least Labor Day to Memorial Day. (I did the Osawegatchie fro inlet...

    St Regis advice

Not sure where you have paddled but for my money, it would be hard to beat Quetico if you like wilderness and near solitude. Like BWCA but a tenth or less of people in same area. Primitive camping but no real need to not use existing sites. Only downside is the permit price.

    St Regis advice

I lived in Chicago area and went to BWCA or Quetico each year. Moved to near Adirondacks for retirement. I have canoed some, not St Regis yet, but not at all the same. Entirely different. Much more streams than lakes. Longer portages - or carrys as called here. Tables, lean-tos, outhouses...

    NFCT Waterway Work Trips

The Northern Forest Canoe Trail has just posted this summer's trips. Two years I've done these - 2 each year - and have really enjoyed them. Late Friday arrival, mid Sunday departure. Registration commences Monday. Based on past years, they are full within a few days, though I think there are...

Canoe for solo tripping and fishing

No water, so no. The sponsor - Rutabaga - does but probably not till ice out.

Canoe for solo tripping and fishing

Not mentioned, pack canoes. You gain some stability, which is nice for fishing and generally, in a narrower more efficient canoe. My swift prospector 14 pack is very stable, not too wide, and very light - 29 pounds. (And the swift pack seat is super comfortable.) On the other hand, I avoid...

Well, maybe flammable (flame worthy?), but I use Jiffy mixes for muffins, biscuits, cakes, and brownies in my JMO. Just add water. They used to have a just add water icing mix which was great on their chocolate cake but dropped it, sadly.

Consider attending Canoecopia in Madison WI March 8-10. A lot of canoes!

    BWCA Permits

Even if they kept it all, it could only be another $32 - so $38 total. Two people at $16 (for up to 365 days iirc). You can add people when you pick up permit. Still not much of a deterrent.

What are your current solo canoes and how do you like them?

I did test paddle an Echo - 2019 paddle fest in Old Forge - and liked it a lot. Albeit, calm flat water. The weight was the only negative, and still may be a factor. 45 lbs vs my current 29 and 34.

What are your current solo canoes and how do you like them?

I too think the Echo would be a good NFCT canoe. Been thinking about one.
