You set your own rates at Paddle Planner. I use 2.5 mph for paddle, 1.5 mph for portage, double portage, and 3 minute loading/unloading. Ultimately I can do 10- 12 miles a day average.

Isn't the whole loop - Isabella and Kawishiwi - 8 to 10 days? Isabella from ep36 to Bald Eagle is around 3 days.

For light weight, Hornbeck beats most, and new prices are similar to used prices on Swifts. Visit their shop and test paddle on their pond. Bring the gear you usually paddle with to test the fit.

I only have done Isabella River from Bald Eagle to third portage east, in October. Nice paddle. I understand there are a lot of beaver fans towards east end. A loop including Isabella and Kawihiwi Rivers has been on my list. I thought I'd start on Lake One, go east on Kawishiwi, and back west...

Thinking about it, I use Paddle Planner more for making a record of the trip just taken rather than planning the next. :)

It interesting what attributes of a camp site are valued and which not. I'm a wet footer and don't mind getting out in knee deep water April to November, so rarely look at landings. I do highly value level tent pads however. I realize and accept others have different priorities. People who...

I tend to think of the paddle speed as an average speed. It's also sort of an approximation. I'd never rely on any paddle planning to be someplace at 3:35 on the dot. It's more knowing I'll usually be on the water by 8:00 and want to make camp by 2:00 or 3:00 but so what if Im early or late?

I used past trips to reverse engineer my paddling, portaging, and loading speeds, so I find it a good indicator. I also don't plan my routes or stick to them if I do, making next days plans each evening.

You could do a lot worse than Ely MN, but would be fine for me.
