    Ambient Temperature for Repairs

In addition to the above suggestions, sunlight makes a huge difference. On fairly calm days in the fifties, I've had success fiberglassing the decks of my ketch as the sun warms the surface to over 70. The sole of the cockpit and the gray hull of my dinghy get to over 100f on a sunny spring day.

Question about Sanding Too Much on One Side of Stern

One other thought: The canoe in my avatar was built as an inexpensive wood canvas, later stripped and fiberglassed. It is not symmetrical side to side. I don't know if that happened on the original build, extensive use, or the repair. I can't tell the difference while paddling.

    Wenonah Canak

If the OP or anyone is unable to find a Canak, you might consider buying a Prism and adding a deck.

    Sitting on the floor?

I'm interested in this too. In my 15'x28" lapstrake canoe, I use a soft folding seat that has no frame, or an old Folbot seat, foam cushions with fabric cover. A strap through the gunwales keeps it upright. The biggest shortcoming of these is that they are not easy to shift while underway. On...

    New Guy, Long Island

I did paddle and sail, Birch Creek, Flanders Bay. Lovely.

    Anyone Named their boat(s)

I call my lapstrake canoe Egret, because it is a slender marsh bird. I'm thinking Warbler for the canoe in my avatar. I haven't painted a name on either.

    New Guy, Long Island

I would love to make the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association assembly this year, but our travel budget may be completely used with two destination weddings. I may paddle or sail today here on LI.

    Might affect your paddle choice

Last year I bought a couple of used paddles at a yard sale. One of them is quite hard and heavy, I joked that it doubles as self defense.

    Waterproof Gutter Tape

I've used Gorilla Tape to patch a Folbot.

Question about Sanding Too Much on One Side of Stern

I probably would, but I wouldn't make myself crazy about it.

    “Chalky Epoxy”

Epoxy and other resins degrade in sunlight. Old fiberglass boats get chalky looking. Penetrol will brighten them up, there are probably other products too. Painting covers the discoloration and prevents further decay. I wouldn't worry about a finish even if it transferred "chalk" by touch. If...

Poll: What is Your Opinion of Tilley Hats

I had my first Tilley decades ago, loved it for sailing and travel. A guy offered to buy it from me in Mexico. I lost it out of a boat somewhere. I've had a couple more that seemed less substantial, a fresh breeze or steady rain bends the brim over my eyes. I've used an Ultimate Hat sailing for...

Canoe Art: Paintings, Sketches, Sculpture, Architecture

It's a capsize proof canoe for extreme rapids, or surf.

Can we thrive with mediocrity in our canoe lives?

To each his own. I know guys that wouldn't get underway with a scratch in the varnish. None of my boats are perfect, nor my techniques. But they do get used.

looking for some Florida day tripping assistance ...

I haven't been to that part of the state. I did drive down to the Space Coast with a canoe on an old car. I stayed in a cheap motel and paddled or sailed a different spot every day, it was great. Enjoy your trip, don't exceed your wife's comfort level. If it were my wife, I would make sure there...

    Dumpster boats

I've had some fun in really cheap boats. My three Folbots ran $150-$260, and the two I sold got my money back. I've accepted at least one dead boat, and helped my Dad with another. They didn't make it back to the water. The eight boats I own now more than fill my free time.

    Modest Floatation

I use replacement seats for inflatable boats. They're tough and less expensive than dedicated float bags.
