Best Bath Facilities on a River Trip

Recently aboard my sailboat, I had cause to swim under the boat to check something. The shower isn't working yet after some repairs. I did have a gallon of bottled water aboard and was pleased to find that was enough to rinse off the saltwater. Recalling the days when I used a five gallon camp...

Best Bath Facilities on a River Trip

On Coast Guard cutters we had limited water, and took "sea showers" 30 seconds water to get wet, turn it off and soap up. One minute water to rinse off. While off watch during a squall, I have stripped down and had an unlimited shower on deck.

Paddling you've done outside of the USA and Canada

I used to own an inexpensive inflatable canoe that fit in a suitcase. It wasn't a great paddler, but better than swimming. I brought it to Jamaica once, someone actually offered to buy it from me. I later sold it to a guy from NYC for his son.

    Canoe Identification

Welcome aboard! I don't recognize it. The decks/carry handles look unusual.

    What are you reading?

Yes, with plenty of 19th century British values.

Carrying Place Canoes - Designs not available anymore

Good luck. I hope the plans aren't lost.

    What are you reading?

Riddle of the Sands. Not canoeing, of course, but plenty of creek and salt marsh navigation.

    Grail of Bail (bailing scoop)

I don't know if it applies to state waters, but federal regulations require all boats to carry a means of bailing. One could use a boot, pan, cup or even a hat.

    WCHA and Adirondack Canoe Symposium

I really want to, but we have a couple of other travel commitments that might expend the budget. And it's 7 hours driving each way.

    Grail of Bail (bailing scoop)

I use a small hand pump, a cut bleach bottle, and a car wash sponge. Years ago in WoodenBoat Magazine, there was an article and pictures of a wooden bilge scoop.

JW Kite build - ready for Gunwales

Copper rivets in boatbuilding are peened over a rove in place, that would work here too. Some roves are crowned, but you want a low profile. You might also try peening it in a vise in advance. Heating with a torch first will soften bronze.

Hanging or storing a canoe off floor in a garage with vehicles

I don't ever put the car in the garage, it's full of boats. I probably could put my Dodge Magnum under my hanging canoes. My latest method is using sliding door hardware screwed to the beams. Each slide has a board and loop of webbing. Carrying the boat from the car the end of the canoe goes...

JW Kite build - ready for Gunwales

You can peen the head of the threaded rod as you would a rivet.

Paddling a solo canoe with a Greenland style paddle?

I have a Greenland paddle cut from a spruce 2x4. It's light and flexible, making a very good low strain paddle. I use it in both my double paddle canoe (28"w, 11"d) and my Canadian canoe (35"w, 12.5"d) while sitting in the bottom. I have other double and single paddles for various uses. I have...

    Wildfires in Canada!

I sailed for a few hours yesterday. Visibility dropped from about three miles to one. The sun was completely obscured. It was eerie.

    The Dark Side of CPR

Sorry Brother, I understand. Some that we couldn't save still bother me years later. But I also remember the many people I helped.

Anybody willing to help me shuttle a vehicle?

I'm far from there, and can't offer a ride. There is at least one ferry across Champlain.

    The Dark Side of CPR

I spent six years active USCG, twenty two years in two police departments. I've seen more than a few medical emergencies, and rendered aid. I always knew that the person shot, stabbed, heart attack, overdose etc wasn't likely to come back, but we tried anyway. I've seen two revived that I can...
