    What are you reading?

Canoe Sailing and Skinny Hull Sailing Magazines, Selected Articles. Really enjoying this. Also reading Ten Hours Until Dawn. I like that kind of stuff, and this has a connection for me as I served on one of the cutters involved and later with the engineer from the rescue boat.

    MIA end caps

Welcome aboard! I think Great Canadian is still in business, you might contact them and see if they sell parts. Or just look for an identical part online, since they probably source them. Good luck, keep us posted.

What Do You Do In Winter ?

On Long Island there is usually free water year round. I do most of my paddling and canoe sailing in the "off season" when my ketch is laid up. The dinghy is still floating to give me my water fix. When that comes ashore I'll break out the canoes and kayaks. I found out last winter that I can...

Time to make a new paddle

I've made a couple of oars, no paddles yet. I'm enjoying this thread.

Poll: How Many Canoes and Kayaks Have you Owned?

18 that I can think of right now. That includes mostly dinghies for rowing and often sailing. It doesn't include at least three that I acquired but passed on without using. The current fleet is seven, four of which fold to store.

Show us pictures of your canoe vehicle with boat(s)

I had a whole coil of that invisible rope, but I can't find it.

Questions about sassafras for a paddle

My other activities have been hard on my shoulders: fractured, torn, separated and dislocated over the years. As one doctor said: "This will hurt you when you're older." I like springy paddles and oars.

    Peterborough Litelift restoration

I'm sure that some here will recoil in horror at the following. Go back now if you're sensitive. All clear? The boat in my avatar was built long ago as wood canvas. Much later, it was sick and naked, the planks were misshapen and cracked. Someone saved it from the burn pile and covered it with...

    2023 Fund Drive Now On

If you're going to include a paywall, keep the bare canoes and strippers behind it! :)

    Seasonal withdrawal

I'm in between Maine and Florida, but much closer to Maine. All of my paddling is off season, I sail my ketch in the summer. Most of my paddling is on salt water, so the season lasts through any but the coldest winters. Last year I paddled for the first time in a full wetsuit on a day less than...

    Snow, where you are?

Being surrounded by salt water will keep us clear of snow longer.

First time builder Ashes Solo Trip

No one will notice the slight imperfections, but trying to achieve perfection will result in a long build, especially on your first attempt. I've built a few small boats, and repaired more. Also cars, bikes, appliances etc. Guys who fix stuff fix stuff.

Stambaugh Sailing Skiff Build in Virginia Mountains

I've only had one boat with a (pivoting) centerboard, my other dinghies used a (drop in) daggerboard. One had a daggerboard that was curved aft, it was inclined to pop up when grounded. That would change the balance if not original, but it was original to the Melonseed I had. That board also had...

Sawyer 17’9” Cruiser on a diet

Thanks for sharing. There's a guy in Florida who builds light hulls with foam construction panels, shapes them with a grinder, coats with fiberglass.

    What is an adventure?

Outside of my professional life (USCG, retired police), most of my adventures have been sailing. While I love a peaceful daysail, sometimes I want to stretch a little and sail on a blustery day. Just recently I had some doubts about my propeller shaft and decided to sail all the way in to the...

Steel River loop- Cheating the Devil

On the topic of photographing waves, they don't show well in pictures. I've been on a ship at sea in 30' waves, they still show flat in pictures unless you get the shot of them breaking over the bow. Even on LI Sound in a sailboat, I don't always realize how much sea is running until I see...

    Howzabouta takedown canoe paddle?

I think there are few (no?) canoe paddles that break down because they're generally short enough to store easily. In your place I would look at scarfing the two short pieces and leave the ferrule out. I am interested in your kayak and paddle. Do you have a link to the ferrules? I own my third...

Ever have a downriver wind push you up river?

I used to sail a sloop up and down a narrow canal. There are houses and trees along it which would obstruct the wind or change its direction. On one occasion I remember the top of the sail billowing one way while the lower portion filled the other. Sailing that same boat under the Brooklyn...
