    Simple Meal Ideas

Not canoeing, but on a sailboat delivery a couple of years back we ran out of cooking propane at sea. Every day I ate cereal for breakfast, a peanut butter sandwich for lunch, and a turkey sandwich for dinner. It was good enough and filling enough.

Finds, Relics, and Evidence from The Past

Sailing small boats in the south shore bays of Long Island I've found some interesting things. On a beach of one I found a collection of nautical iron including chain and oarlocks. Too much to come from one boat, I wonder how it got there. Near another island of long time summer homes, my...

    Almost lost one

Rain and tides did the most damage here. Though a couple of boats broke lines from wave action in the harbor. I've had two canoes blow away, one in a microburst, the other in a hurricane. Both were recovered and repaired.

Kodiak 8x9 tent with ammo can stove

I haven't camped in winter, but have slept in sailboats, or day sailed in cold weather. It's impressive what a small heater like a mantle lamp can do. If I can get the temperature above 50f, I'm happy.

    What have I Got Here?

Nice boat. I own a mystery canoe with similarities and differences. Mine was originally wood/canvas built in the middle of the last century, fiberglassed in this century. I believe mine to be a Faber, but it may be another built in the same area and style. Mine has a similar profile to yours...

    Winter Swimming?

My wife "polar plunges" in November to raise money for Special Olympics, the water is rarely below 50, but the air often is. I have swam in cold water as a drill in the USCG, also to recover a knife and to set an anchor. I once capsized a narrow sailing canoe in winter. I was wearing a short...

How is your winter so far?

Fog the last three days. Paddled an hour and a half on the Peconic yesterday.

How is your winter so far?

Only flurries on Long Island so far, but that's not unusual. December was cool, I think October was warm, there's no telling what's ahead. I hope to get out paddling in the next few days, maybe today.

    AI and on-line posers

I moderate a home brewing forum. We can identify the AI posts pretty easily, they have a particular style. But it's young technology, who knows what the future holds?

    Winter footwear preferences?

Winter sailing and paddling I often wear Timberlands. When I was young I had a prized pair of Herman Survivors. They were double leather, probably American made. They did a lot of hard cold miles.

    Caught in big weather events

Trees snapping in hard weather can be scary. One exploded from a lightning strike across the street, it sounded like cannon fire. One of the scary moments I experienced in police work was going through the woods in a snowstorm, hearing limbs snap above.

When you can’t help but build a boat

I've built three, two mostly outdoors. My first boat was a Glen-L Topper 11' sailing dinghy. That was around 1987, I was just out of the Coast Guard, working ashore, missing the water. I had been reading and dreaming of boatbuilding since maybe ten years old. I borrowed my mother's yard, drove...

    Caught in big weather events

Your posts remind me of another weather event that damaged my canoe. I was in Lewes De visiting family, I bought my 15'x28" 40# lapstrake canoe. We were staying one block from the beach, where many people stored small boats. I left the canoe down there too, with slight reservations. One morning...

    Caught in big weather events

I don't remember any strong weather in a canoe. I've been at sea in gales in vessels ranging from 39'-210', weather bad enough to break things on a steel ship. Probably my most dangerous weather experiences were squalls. Anchored at night on a 20' boat in a large bay, thunderstorms strong enough...

Build your own canvas wall tent

Very cool, thanks for the write up! I've done some sewing on covers and sails. I started with an old Japanese "badged" machine. It had an all steel drive and worked well enough. A few years ago while making all new sail covers I bought a Sailrite, which is a good machine for heavy cloth.

Florida's Designated Paddling Trails - Very Detailed Site

Cool resource, I'll check it out. I've actually been "lost" in the mangroves a couple of times in Florida, but found myself after a little while. I've also encountered alligators. The small ones were scared of me, the large ones weren't.
