WTB: Family style canoe (OT Camper, Penobscot, etc?) in Royalex

I have had both a Camper and Penobscot 17' to haul the family around in. The camper felt much more stable of the two due to it's flat bottom. It would be great to test ride them for your self. That said, I would definitely recommend the Camper for a first family canoe. Dave

How many paddles do you bring on a canoe trip?

2 solo, 3 tandem. Haven't needed the spare yet. Been carrying a multi tool in my day pack for 13 years and haven't used it yet. By now if I needed it I probably wouldn't remember that I had it. Dave

Is there a doctor in the house?

Machinist 25 years, electric motor technician 25 years. Now retired. My FB profile lists my education as having graduated from the School Of Hard Knocks. Lately I have realised that I haven't graduated yet. Dave

    Weather eye

I have to agree with Goonstroke on watching wind direction. winds out of the east usually spell trouble for me. NW is normal where I'm at.

    Symmetrical vs. Asymmetrical Canoe Hulls

Glenn, you make some very good points in post #7. I can't argue with science and would agree with you 100%. I like to look at the math when analysing situations. However, I could be the best bad example on this site. When it comes to paddling I do it all wrong. My solo is a symmetrical tandem...

Legal restrictions on selling canoes built from plans?

I'll muddy the waters a bit more. Back in the 1994 I bought a book on building strip canoes. It came with a paper pattern for forms for a particular model. I had in mind to move the forms around and create a 15' solo from a 16' tandem. I also planned on changing the dimensions of the beam. I...

Canoe for solo tripping and fishing

I paddle tandems solo and have both a NC Pal and a Bob's special. I trip (Lakes) in the Pal and take day trips on local rivers in the Bob's. The Bob's special is 1 foot shorter and 1 inch wider than the Pal. My local rivers are shallow and I stand up paddle and pole some sections. Were I to...

Thoughts on small tandems for solo use / Brand Preference

One more vote for a Nova Craft Pal. I have paddled one for 13 years now. Have taken solo and tandem trips in it. Good all around canoe.

    Caught in big weather events

While not really qualifying as a "big" weather event, an experience comes to mind. A couple years ago in the Fall I was camped on the edge of the BWCA intending to take day trips. I had had a serious motor cycle accident that spring and had not recovered yet enough to take an actual canoe trip...

Build your own canvas wall tent

Pretty cool Robin. I have watched your trip videos and had no Idea that you made your own tent. I too prefer the shoulder seasons for canoe tripping.
